My husband and I bought a six year old Hereford cow (HF 4L Beyond X THM 8027 Vicky 1026) with a three week old heifer calf at side a few weeks ago. She is a good cow, nice udder, good flank, and good bone. Stride is good, flat back. Was shown when she was younger. The heifer calf at side is a purebred Hereford out of TH 223 71I Victor 406Y. I am trying to decide at this point whether to breed her back to a Hereford bull or use our new Maintainer bull we bought this past weekend. We don't have any other Hereford cattle, but she was what we liked when we were at the sale and I'm not picky when it comes to breeds if the animal is that good. What does everyone think? Breed her for a purebred or let her give us a crossbred? if you think I should keep her PB, what should I breed her to? Thanks all!

The answer to that question depends on your plans for the calf... Good Hereford cattle are gaining some popularity again in our part of the world. If you think you can market a purebred Hereford calf, regardless of whether it's a bull or a heifer, then I might breed her that way. If you don't think that's a likely option and you plan to market this calf across the scales with the rest of the calves out of this Maine bull, then I'd breed her so her calf matches the rest.

I agree with lean beef Herefords are getting pretty popular now and if you think you could sell a purebred calf in your area go for it.
