Thought I would share this with you all,
My son has 2 steers for this year that we picked them up in November; one is an Unforgivin out of an Angus cow, dog gentle. The other is a Heat Wave out of a Grizz cow, he is a bit uptight. He had injured his lower jaw from fighting the halter but was all healed, just head shy when we bought him. First couple times we haltered him it was a fight; he would bawl and jump around every time you got close to him. Each time we worked with him he gets a little better but does not like you to get past his front shoulder toward his head. Makes haltering a turning loose a pain as well as combing and blowing out.
This past Monday we had pushed them up into the run to halter them (the run is 8’ wide and 36’ long), weather was cold and windy and calves had a little more bounce in their step so when we went to put halters on them we just went round and round. This is when my son decides he has had enough takes the show stick gets it under the Unforginvin starts scratching, calf stands there and we put the halter on him, no big deal we have used this method with him before. But then he turns to the Heat Wave who always shoves his head in a corner so you can’t get to him and starts scratching him I walk to his head and slip the halter on as easy as pie.
We have done this everyday for the last week and it works every time, you can also comb him from tail to head with out a problem and blow him out just as long as you have the stick on him. I thank it will take about 2 to 3 weeks of this before he will just stand and let you work him with out the stick.
Knabe , Just kind of went with your post on the Cattletoday and the heifer with a problem.
