I have to admit I don't get as many sales as many of you. Just curious on what your favorite has been or which one do you look forward to yearly?

I've always enjoyed the Ohio's Beef Expo's Maine sale. I have to also include Rowe's but think it was different this year due to a new location.

I went up to DeRouchey's bull sale once.  Even though it was colder than bejeebers, I had a ball.  Great cattle, great people, and facinating to watch what things bring.

I also love going to Core's heifer sale.  It's a very different kind of sale but I also enjoy going and its easy to have the kids get involved with it.

Also, I've been to the Generations of Excellence sale 2 years in a row.  Tim and the gang throw a great sale.

I love going to Able Acres Polled Hereford sale in Wingate, IN.  They have it every year the saturday after Thanksgiving and we have been going since the early nineties.  They are great people, have the best cattle I have seen, and it's a great experience with hereford cattleman coming from everywhere.  Its always cold and at night and that just makes it better.

The hartman heifer sale this weekend.  Great food, great drinks and probably the best cattle you will ever see in one place...

Absolutely, best food at any sale I have ever been too and the frozen margaritas weren't bad either!

The most memorable sale I attended was the Graham dispersal in Minnesota in the 70's.  Sale averaged about 3,200 which was about 2,000 more than any other Shorthorn sale in my lifetime had averaged.  At the time, I thought it would be the highest priced Shorthorn sale I would ever see.  Now, I enjoy going to Sullivans to see 'how the other half lives.'  This fall was the first of their sales I have missed.  I also enjoy John Hagie's sale and I love to go to Razor's in Texas.  It feels good to get out of Iowa and see green grass the end of March.  I would love to go to Cates' sale, someday I'll make it.  Just have too many family birtdays and get togethers that weekend.

hands down the ohio beef expo sales, the breeders who attend are the most supportive and positive cattlemen I have bought from.

I really enjoy the Ohio Beef Expo Shorthorn sale, usually find some pretty good deals in there.

Went to Cates' sale for the first time this past year, WOW. Great food, lots of hospitality. Those guys really make you feel welcome. The best ones are usually untouchable (for me anyhow) but there are some good deals, especially in the bred cows. Fun to see som of the "major players" spend some cash.

I agree with oakview regarding the Graham Land and Livestock dispersal in Minnesota. I believe it was 1973, maybe 1974. I remember this sale as if it was two weeks ago. It took over an hour for the bull Great White Hope to be sold. He ended up selling for $8000. Most people thought he was going to sell for many times that, so they did not even plan on bidding on this bull. As the bidding progressed slowly, different  breeders were forming syndicates and the sale would stop for a few minutes as breeders put their heads together. Eldon Krebs ( of Angus fame) was working for R Lee Johnson from Ohio at the time. He partnered with myself for a few minutes and we bid the bull up to about $6- 7000 then we bowed out. We were going to call our partnership " Hope like Hell" Cattle Co. as neither of us had much money at the time. The night before the sale, a bunch of breeders had a pool and each person guessed what this bull would bring. I think the lowest guess was $12,000 and the highest was $75,000.

There have been many great sales over the years. The Cates and Cagwin sales are always great events. The Hoyt Central sales at Blair, Nebraska were always excellent events as well. Here in Canada, I always think of the many great days in the 70s and 80s in the exotic craze. I worked many of the Bar 5 Simmental sales in Manitoba. I remember a Bar 5 sale that grossed over $1.2 million. A fullblood cow ( that had not calved in two years) sold for $95,500. An open 3/4 heifer in the same sale sold for $40,000. Half blood heifers sold to $15,000. I also remember that Bar 5 asked me to help haul the sale cattle to the Brandon exhibition grounds. I had 12 open fullblood heifers on the trailer and the highway was a solid sheet of ice from freezing rain. I was scared stiff when I thought of the value of the cattle I had in the trailer, and I was greatly relieved when I got them there. I remember these 12 heifers averaged over $14,000 in the sale.

There have been many other sales that come to mind that have been memorable.

I have no interest in their cattle, but I've always wanted to hit up an Express Ranch sale. I hear Funk puts on a heck of a party down there.

During the mid to late 1970s there was a Polled Hereford farm in Northeast Ohio - Spring Creek Farms - that had a spring sale and a fall sale.  The high sellers were usually in the spring, but we always enjoyed the fall sale more - beautiful fall colors, great food, and even a club calf sale in the evening a couple of years.  I still tell my wife that the best chili I've ever had was prepared by the Pierpont, Ohio fire department and served along with burgers, etc, between the production sale and club calf sale at Spring Creek!

The Glenkirk sales were always memorable as well.  I'll never forget the sale (in 1982) when our family and an investor (a doctor) had gathered $35K to buy a heifer called "Crowd Pleaser" - we bid once - she sold for $85K for 1/2 interest - I was a bit disappointed...she did end up being National Champion heifer.

I've been to some sales where they charge for the food. To me that is a little on the cheap side. I guess they feel they might have more lookers rather than buyers. Any comments on that practice?
