Was wonderign what it is talked to a couple breeders all they say is that its a defect but noone has seen a hydro calf or knows what it is. Any info would be great to hear
Show Heifer said:Hydro is a defect that causes the brain cavity to fill with fluid, thus the "hydro" name.
Always born dead. Most of time with difficulty or C-section due to size of head.
It is independent of AM, as some are carriers of both, while others just carry one or the other.
Some are aborted early, but most seem to be carried full term according to the research.
Simple recessive inheritance. Like all other defects to date.
There is a test for it through Dr.Beever (Isn't that man amazing!)
Carriers that have been found have been posted on the Angus website.
Get ready for two more defects to be hitting the waves, FCS and what is being called so far as Itty Bitty.
From what I hear FCS is close to a test but still more research and looking for Itty Bitty.
Hope this helps.
