Hydro is a defect that causes the brain cavity to fill with fluid, thus the "hydro" name.
Always born dead. Most of time with difficulty or C-section due to size of head.
It is independent of AM, as some are carriers of both, while others just carry one or the other.
Some are aborted early, but most seem to be carried full term according to the research.
Simple recessive inheritance. Like all other defects to date.
There is a test for it through Dr.Beever (Isn't that man amazing!)

Carriers that have been found have been posted on the Angus website.

Get ready for two more defects to be hitting the waves, FCS and what is being called so far as Itty Bitty.
From what I hear FCS is close to a test but still more research and looking for Itty Bitty.

Hope this helps.

new to SP but I was looking back through old posts and noticed one from way back where you guaranteed that ur angus herd was clean. Just wondering if you have them tested or if you don't have any defects by parentage?

Wow you have a lot of time on your hands if you looked that far back. And you did that why?

Anyway, so far, the genetics Gods have smiled upon me in the angus breed and even after the NEW defects, I have had NO, I will repeat that, I have had NO affected pedigrees. Since I have no known affected pedigrees in my herd, I am waiting for a combo test so I do not have to submitt more than one sample. So when the FCS test is confirmed I will send in samples to be tested for every known defect in case there is a "mouse in the wood pile" from a bull I bought.

Is that acceptable to you?

By the way, if you want to know what happens to carriers on my farm, just ask,  as when TH/PHA was still being hid and lied about, I fell victim to those defects.

Anything else I can help you with?

No that will do. I was just curious. And I understand ur frustration with genetic defects being hid and agree that there is no room for them in the cattle business. guess i'll PM you next time i need anything.
