Recently purchased a Char X Friction heifer out at Kris Blacks sale, this is first time I've really had a smoke colored cow and just curious on what to breed her to. She's bred this first time to Total Solution. This cow is as stout and smooth as they come and will likely enter into our donor program this fall. Any suggestions on what to flush her to?

again, i'll probably get raked, but heatwave.  hopefully she has some milk.  i saw two herds in texas where this was basically their base cow, and they had a heat wave clone and steer clone in the pasture.  of course this is with the appropriate caveats regarding the defects.  hit me.

I bred one I've got to Jake's Proud Jazz and have a heifer coming due in Sept. I think she should be pretty good but I'll know more then.

Which one did you get?  I was at the sale.  Lots of good ones as usual.  Which Charolais bloodline does she have?  If its not Hoodoo, you could go back Yellowjacket if you wanted a better chance at a colored calf.

Lot 83 from Ryan Went.  The cow is not a hoodoo, but a purebred charolais.  Ryan said the cow is built like an angus, not your typical charolais.

I thought I remembered a good white Friction heifer coming through early on.  Honestly, I'd give Went or Black a call to see what they recommend.  I've got a good black Friction heifer that will calve in September.  Haven't decided what I'm going to do with her.  We buy bulls from Kris and started to put her in his sale, but decided we needed her too bad for our own herd.  I love the Friction cattle.  But I've had terrible conception with him, so she's the only one we've got.

JRG, Fred's Charolais and Angus Ranch from here in Nebraska are close friends of mine (Jamie Goes by Freddy on the Planet) and they have bred for quite a few smokes in the last few years.  In fact he sold 4 very good young fall calving cows to Ryan about 3 years ago.  A year ago this Spring Wents sold a Heatwave steer out of one of these cows as one of their high selling fall steers for a pretty good chunk of change.  This cow was a purebred but I would think the Friction should still help.  Not sure if she goes back to one of the Fred cows but their charolais are not typical as you described.

They had champion bull at the Classic this February and that Bull sold into Kentucky and theirs interest in promoting semen on him.  Jamie sold a calf this last Jan/Feb that sold for $ 28,000 and he was a Carnac out of the same cow as the champion bull.  I posted pictures and a video of him on here this Spring and by the way to all that replied to that post, the last I heard he is still a bull.  Jamie would be more that glad to viset if you want to pick his brain.
His website is www.fredranch.com

Here is a link to the Carnac Bull Calf:  http://fredranch.com/multimedia/videos/cattle/7/gunsmoke--.wmv

Below is a photo of him.

You could ask Ryan if this goes back to a Fred Charolais cow.  I know Jamie has had success with Carnac, Heatwave, Success, Lifeline and Taz and he has some Alias and Vanilla Ice this year.  My son won our County Fair last year with a Taz times PB Char from the Freds.  Great people if you want someone to call to get some advice.

Thanks for the info RSC.  We planned on calling Ryan to pick his brain when breeding season came around, but wondered what everyone else thought.

No Problem, post a picture of your smoke female sometime if you get one.  I haven't flushed to Friction much but I know Jamie has.  He had one large flush out of a Char donor that was successful and one out of a PB Angus that was good but several where the semen was pretty marginal and the flushes weren't so successful.  I think he had some semen early on that was pretty good.

How bad was the conception rate?  We were thinking of flushing a donor to Friction.

I got one calf out of ten cows bred.  Rest of the bulls I used ran right around 60%.  Maybe I had a bad batch, but I think others have had similar results.  If I were going to use him again, I'd call Caldwell and see if they had some that was better than other batches.

I would be willing to pay extra for good Friction semen.  That one calf we got has made a heck of a heifer.  She looks great and bred first try.  We'll see what happens come calving.

very nice.
I would use Who Made Who or hannibal either on on her. SInce I am a shorty person, I would also give Double Vision a shot for a steer prospect.

jrg-She is a great looking heifer.  Very well rounded in her phenotype.  She is the kind that you can breed to almost any bull and get great results.  I would add a bit of forerib to her to make her just right.  How old is she?  She looks like an open cow.  Just curious.

Lifeline, Heatwave, Dr. Who (for females) or Texas Hold'em (Habeger).  If she were mine I would use Lifeline.
