Very nice steer, he looks like he should grow and feed out really well for you!

Thanks everyone!

We weren't very excited about the snow either CAB! It rained pretty much all summer so there is lots of crop still in the field. Between the declining cattle prices and tough harvest most of the farmers around here are feeling pretty down. On the upside (or maybe downside) the rain that we got this week knocked most of the snow down.

Simmgal: her sire's name is NJW 73S 22Z Mighty Max 97B ET.

Here's an updated picture of my heifer. I have decided not to show anything this fall so she isn't all cleaned up but I'm really happy with how she's developing. We call her the "gets fat on snowballs" type.

The Big Show / Genetics for Generations Hereford Sale
« on: September 18, 2016, 08:27:07 PM »
Myself (Barefoot Polled Herefords), along with NCX & Glenrose Polled Herefords are very excited to be hosting Genetics for Generations on October 9 in Vegreville, Alberta. This will be the first sale that we've hosted together and the cool part is that all of my calves are sired by the very first herdsire I ever purchased who I happened to buy right here on Steerplanet!

Below is the link to our catalog, let me know what you think!

I appreciate the comments! The big guy was butchered last week and our butcher (who is not afraid to speak her mind- good or bad) said that she was extremely impressed with the beef so I can't wait to see how it tastes.

Gargan I think he looks like he'd make a really nice steer- he's a showy little guy for sure! He's certainly got a stacked pedigree but I agree that I think he'd be better suited as a steer than a bull. Keep us posted.

The Big Show / Re: Hereford heifer what u think ?

It looks to me like she has a lot of potential. She's marked right and appears to be sound which is important because those are the things that you can't change. She is certainly young and very green but if you get her on a good developing ration right away and give yourself a bit of time before your first show I think you'll be happy with the results. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it!

The Big Show / The quiet ones are more fun!

My coworkers talked me into bringing two heifers to put on our parade float this past weekend. The heifers loved all of the extra attention and the kids and their families seemed to really like seeing something a little less traditional at the parade.

Just thought I'd post some final pictures for anyone following this post. We didn't quite get it done but he was Reserve Champion Straight Bred at our junior national show.

Thanks for the comments! I think she'll be fun to haul around and most importantly she's bred to be a really good cow.

Cebwtx: Nice bull, I agree that they have a really smiliar look to them!

What do you think of this one? She's a March heifer that was purchased in dam from Blair Athol Polled Herefords last fall. Her dam is a Blair Athol Classic daughter and she's sired by an NJW bull who is a maternal brother to Trust, Hometown and Downhome. She was second in class at our Canadian Junior Nationals and she'll be my show heifer this year.

The Big Show / Re: Fair time stories

At one of the very first junior shows that I attended there was a long fire hose hooked up to the wall so kids didn't have to carry water buckets very far. The hose seemed like a good idea until one of the younger kids got ahold of it and eventually had everyone cornered in the far side of the barn to avoid being sprayed. When they finally convinced the kid to hand over the hose the organizers ended up having to postpone the show for 45 minutes to give everyone time to dry off their cattle and change into dry clothes. Being a laid back summer show everyone thought it was pretty hilarious (with the exception of the kid's parents, I still don't know how he managed to make it out of that one alive).

On the same topic of kids causing trouble at shows last year we were in the bleachers watching a show when we noticed some young kids collecting pop bottles and cans. We thought that it was really nice that they were helping clean up and commented on what good kids they were. The little boy started lining up the bottles and we said "wow, he's even counting the money he's going to get, what a smart little kid!". Before we could say anything else he stood behind his line of cans and bottles and started booting them one by one into the showring while the show was going on. Luckily all the animals in the ring were quiet but everyone sure laughed when we realized that those supposedly helpful little kids were actually big troublemakers!

It's been a while since I updated this post so I thought I'd put up some more pictures of Clyde and his first calf crop. I am really happy that I took a chance on this guy and bought him.

1st picture: Clyde in November 2015
2nd: Slicked out cell phone picture in April
3rd: Front view in May
