The Big Show / Re: Sublime

Short of testing him I have no idea if he is homo or hetero black. The shorthorns he was bred to were blues.  One calf is black with white markings and the other is a deep red. I would assume since he had a red calf he is most likely a red carrier or hetero black.

The one shorthorn was an off red color. Dual Threat is a red carrier, I have a red one out of him. Dam and grand dam knock the white off and have always thrown black or smoke.

I did. Our thriller shorthorn and her MAB daughter. Picture of both of them. Black heifer is out of the MAB cow and the reddish one out of her dam. Sold quick, before we even broke them.  Weve fought mud all year, so excuse the first 18 inches of mud. They were both low birthweight and both dams were 100 pound calves and the MAB cow is kind of a pud, but shes a great cow and has some of the best calves every year. Shes probably under 1200 as a heavy bred.

It looks like composite and full Italian breeding. To be a composite purebred it looks like 12.5. % Italian full blood and two generations of registered parents. Full bloods like like theyll work like the other full blood continental breeds.

Anyone else read the proposed changes to the way cattle will be registered and classified in the future?  If Im reading it correctly theyre going to issue fractions based on percentages and numbers of parents previously registered. And it looks as though they may have two separate herd books. They put an article in the last Chi Journal about the proposed changes.

Chi. Because everyone who drives by your place deserves registerable cattle.

We put our bull Sublime in a post a year or so ago. Hes now been collected and his first calves have hit the ground and most are weaned now. They have been better than expected. We used him on a wide variety of heifers and cows and only had one pull due to presentation. Birthweights were 65 to 80 lbs. We even linebred him and those calves were outstanding. He is a Dual Threat son (I80 x WDM/Ace) out of a Maternal Perfection x WDM x Kadabra x Ali x Total Play x Blackjack Simmi. He is 3/8 Maine and 12.77 Chi, so every calf can register Chi. Attached are some recent pics in his working clothes after covering about 75 cows from Spring through Summer. No grain and just on pasture. Semen is available through us in Ohio and at Hawkeye. He is also listed in the Bull Exchange.

Nothing probably helps as well as unlimited free choice long stem hay. Precon is wonderful, but long stem first cutting hay is invaluable.

The Big Show / Re: Data Bank or High Style on heifers

Griswold's have said that Databank is ok to use on 1st calf heifers, but only if they are big bodied, broody maternal bred cattle.  High Style is listed as calving ease, but I would probably call Chris Terembes and ask what they are seeing for birthweight.  I know that Moore's in Illinois used him a lot and they could probably provide you some insight as well.

If you still want to keep numbers in them look at Loverboy.  He has really good API and TI numbers and will make pretty nice females.  His bulls aren't too bad either.  I have really liked the W/C Password calves, he's a full brother to Relentless and he just makes them really complete.  If you're wanting competitive steers, you will have to jump in the clubby market.
