The Big Show / Re: Flushing Heifers
« on: June 22, 2012, 04:00:12 PM »
There are a number of theories on virgin heifers and I'm no expert, but here are some of my thoughts:
On the up side, flushing a heifer is the most productive time in the life of a cow so if you decide to go that route you should have a productive chance at having a good flush.
We have not ever flushed a heifer, the embryologist we work with does not like the risk of flushing heifers.  Regardless of the price of a heifer, until I have a donor quality COW there is really no need to do a flush.  I don't know how many show heifers we have had that look fabulous in their show career but we just never found a bull that clicked with them, some of our most expensive heifers went to the sale barn, they couldn't raise a calf.
Anytime you do a flush you take the chance that something will go wrong and she will never breed again, like it or not flushing is a gamble and when you mess with super ovulation drugs you are taking a risk.

Goat/Lamb Chat / Re: Bracing too hard???
« on: March 16, 2012, 10:49:37 AM »
I'm a little late here, but what the heck.  We have this same problem in Kansas, we are not allowed to brace or touch the goat other than to set the feet yet when you get to a major show they are all full brace shows just like sheep.  The look of a goat drastically changes some for the good some not, so do you pick a goat based on how they look braced or not braced?

Agree with Till-Hill, as long as you have them up where you can watch them you will be fine, may need a little tlc but as long as your calf is eating you are ok to wean.

We fell into that catagory this year at Maine Jr. Nationals, because we had a May that had a calf at side (which she should have had) she showed in her May class with her calf.

The Big Show / Re: best place to buy high dollar claves

The group listed above plus Todd Caldwell, Bobby May, Kirk Stierwalt-  Pretty much anyone can find you a good one for high dollar, the trick is, who can find you the best place to find calves that will win on a budget!

Buck and Bushy Park would be more geared to heifers I assume you are looking for steers?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know in ours (Logan does smile in most of them) we pick out the best picture of the animal, you will normally have 3 to 5 pics to select from and your looking at ears and tilt of the head and small things that will make a difference in how the promotional pictures will look, the people are just background to the animal.
Don't know why most of them aren't smiling, we normally are on cloud nine with any win and are still smiling the next day!

The judge was paid to speak, obviously someone valued his opinion, when was the last time someone paid for yours, that would make you a cattle expert like OH.

Is the national Hereford show live?  It wouldn't be quite the same but it would at least give you the idea of what you need to do.

I apologize GONEWEST for my comment, I didn't realize deadening a tail was animal abuse, just stating a fact, that is the only thing I have ever seen it used for.  I guess I have never seen anyone that gave one everclear to change behaviour, Ace and Thorazine work just fine why would you use something you have to guess what the outcome is going to be.

Something totally off the subject you might give a try is a product called Focus, not a drug and can be legally fed to calm one down
here is the web site http://shobertsfeedsupplements.com/products/focus.html
