The Big Show / Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"
« on: August 29, 2016, 07:11:04 PM »
Watching some shows over the past month and perusing the show results, it appears to me that the judges are picking heifers that are more rectangular in their body shape rather than the wedge shape.  These heifers appear to me to be less feminine and plainer made than just a year or two ago.  Maybe the show world has passed me by.  Any thoughts from folks on the Planet?

The Big Show / Question for Cattle Repro Gurus
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:31:49 PM »
Have a heifer that has either been sneaky about her heat cycles or is not cycling.  Did vet exam and everything normal and could feel follicles with everything in the right place.  Decided to use GnRH with lute a week later and did use the GnRH.  However, after thinking it over I was concerned that the GnRH may not be good because the bottle was subjected to below freezing temperatures in a refrigerator in the barn (several cans of diet pepsi exploded in the frig).  Have not use the lute yet and instead considering another shot of GnRH first with a fresh bottle.  It appears that there would be no harm in a second shot of GnRH 7 days after the first one even if the first one was good quality GnRH and then lute in a week.  Any opinions?

The Big Show / Solid Gold v Yellow Repo v Smokin Bob
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:58:53 PM »
Looking to use a couple of Charolais-based bulls on some Angus-Maine based cows.  What are the main differences between these bulls and where they will work (cow frame size, hair, thickness, bone size).  Yellow Repo is the only THF of the three.

The Big Show / Need to Avoid Spastic Paresis
« on: May 10, 2013, 01:07:51 PM »
We have an Irish Whiskey x Angus cow that had a spastic paresis calf a couple of years ago.  Do not want to do that again.  Looking at Unstoppable on this cow (couldn't get Monopoly clone with my main semen order), but see Unstoppable has Habanero (Pistol Pete x Powerplant) and Witch Doctor on the dam side.  Are Habanero and Witch Doctor suspects as far as spastic paresis?  Any SP calves out of Unstoppable out there?

The Big Show / Which Lister blade for clipping heads?
« on: July 10, 2012, 03:34:58 PM »
Was rummaging around the tack room and found our set of Lister Star clippers again.  Tried to clip heads on cattle one time and the stock blade was what we used on lambs and just took the hair down too tight for clipping heads.  I know there are several blades that fit Lister clippers and am wondering if any of those blades work for clipping heads.  The clippers are nice for size and weight as opposed to the big noisy flatheads for roughing out dirty cattle, so would like to find a use for them.

The Big Show / Monopoly v. Eye Candy -- Calving Ease
« on: February 10, 2012, 07:20:34 PM »
Kind of looking at Eye Candy and Monopoly for a couple of larger cows (1600 lbs.).  I think either one would have a decent chance of clicking with them.  How do they compare for calving ease?

The Big Show / Monkey Mouth
« on: April 05, 2011, 06:45:32 PM »
I am wondering if there is any updated research on monkey mouth.  I pulled DL's quote from an old post:

Monkey mouth is believed to be a recessive trait with variable penetrance - meaning that you can see widely varied phenotypes - from the calf that looks like a French bulldog without incisors to the calf whose botton jaw is an inch or more longer that the top making it hard for him to eat.

We have a cow that has thrown her second monkey mouth calf (this is her second calf).  She does go back to JDS Stout, who goes back to Power Plant, so I figure she is a big part of the problem.  My question is whether there is any information showing that the dam can be the only carrier for it to be expressed in the calf or is it truly a recessive trait requiring both dam and sire to be carriers?

The Big Show / Boning Legs for Blow and Go Show
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:07:31 PM »
If unable to use adhesives, what is best product for boning legs for a blow and go show?  Looks like shaving cream or Sullivan's white foam may be it.  Anything else work from the old days?

The Big Show / Angus Association - Fawn Calf List Released
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:28:11 PM »
If anyone is interested, AAA released the list of known fawn calf carriers and those that tested free.

The Big Show / Grass Tetany
« on: May 21, 2010, 01:50:11 PM »
We just had one of the registered Angus cows go down this morning after receiving 3 inches of precip in the past week and the first warm weather of the spring to get grass growing.  I knew it was coming, just had to figure out who would be first.  This cow calved the 1st of April and is a fairly heavy milker.  We have had the high magnesium mineral out since the first of March and have had some grass hay set out in self feeders for the past month.  We caught her pretty early and got an IV in her and she was able to stand and quit shaking.  Not out of the woods yet, but one of the more positive looking ones at this point.  Kept her in and will probably just put her on hay for a week or so.

We run in common with other family members who run Gelbvieh and Simmy cross cows.  Ours are Angus and Angus x Limousin.  The Gelbvieh and Simmy cows seem to never go down with grass tetany while the Angus and Angus x Limmie crosses are the only ones affected.  Anyone have any theories why the difference between breeds on this?

The Big Show / Olympic Hockey

Anybody watch the USA v. Canada Olympic hockey game?  Great game - both sides were really going at it.

Check out this web site.  Has some good stuff on it.

The Big Show / Frame Size of Sunseeker Steers
« on: December 11, 2009, 02:40:09 PM »
Trying to gauge the finished weight and frame size of steer project.  Can anyone give me an idea how big Sunseeker steers finish out?  Not sure of his dam -- probably fairly average.  Have 800 lb. steer shooting for early August county fair.

If anyone is heading east on I-80 through Des Moines and anywhere near (even 100 miles or so) of Cheyenne, WY - I need to ship a stock waterer in the next couple of weeks.  Would pay some of your fuel for your trouble.

The Big Show / U.S. Healthcare
« on: August 21, 2009, 05:13:49 PM »
Just cruising through the Drudge Report and came across the link to this article.  Trying to figure out what the various permutations on nationalized health care would cost versus current private insurance and coverage.  Thought a new thread would be good on this.
