For shorthorn Plus- What do you want to do with the plus calves? Monopoly although is a THC is making beautiful prospects for plus cattle. I like my Simmi' x Shorthorns. We are currently using a red maine to make plus cattle and liking the females.

We are small too. But I sell to 4-H kids. Steers and heifers. They all want them registered. I do a dozen calves a year and to pay for that fee individually for registration alone is worth the $100. I try to record as much as possible weaning weights yearling weights even register calves we loose at birth so I can contribute to the EPD's on my females and bull. I do agree, I do not think a privately owned magazine should not be part of the membership fee unless there is going to be more editorial control by association itself. I have my own personal feelings about that you can PM me if you like. If a kid needs to be a member, I will pay their fee if that what it takes to get a junior on board.

The Big Show / Re: Thoughts on this Heifer

I think she is little on the masculine side as Knabe pointed out. BUT, I would think about pelvic measurements on her. That would be first and foremost. With her structure and visual appearance it just indicates more masculine build. she may be fine and have plenty of room to calve. if you find that to be the case, there are alot of calving ease choices besides straight angus. There are good Shorthorn, Maine, simmi and Galloway choices.
As far as her flank, that is a tough one. I think structurally you have done about all you can do with feeding.

1 and 3 are my picks. Really like 3rd pic. That calf just looks like an easy feeding fat calf.

By the time they get done with the EID tags for state and county, I don't put additional tags in any of our animals. We are running very small herd. I have no reason to tag them. I know every calf and cow family by heart. TO each their own.

The Big Show / Re: Let me know what you think about steer!!

I don't think he is that bad at all. After watching facebook the past few days and seeing what people are posting for sale as show steer you got a pretty decent one. Those feet have been trimmed awfully short. I would put him on an 11% ration plenty of hay free choice and feed him. not sure if its a hair show or a slick show- to me it makes no difference. Yes some flaws can be hidden with hair. But if you can't feed one, it doesn't matter if you have 5 inches of hair the judge will see the calf is not finished. Like he has some neck to him and looks like he could have some depth if you feed him. I do not know the feed prause you talking about either. We use a mill mix feed because it is easier to adjust when we need to.

Thank you for the replies, if she's Shorthorn cross she will fit right in. Thanks for the suggestions as well, i appreciate the input. Monopoly is to rich for my blood, do the clones work just as well? For this round i bred her to BNWZ Jose (don't know if she stuck yet) i didn't want anything to clubby until i know how she calves.

Sorry about the pictures, should i be cropping them before posting? i took them with my phone.

From what I saw this year our state fair, calves were out of Monopoly clones were no different that the Monopoly calves. I like your choice on Jose. You should get a nice calf either way that is interesting color pattern. Are the insides of her ears red or black?
