I have to ask, was there no warranty on the product? I would think that there would be a year or at least six months on the air conditioning components.

ABS announced this year that they would be going to 1/4ml straws but not in previous years.

The Big Show / Re: Help...Weight Gain
« on: June 25, 2020, 08:37:02 AM »
Yes it is possible and if he is eating that amount of feed daily he should do it somewhat easily. If his feed conversion is 8 lbs of feed per pound of gain that would make him gain 3.75lbs per day X 30 = 112.5lbs of gain. I would not start changing anything at this point because IMO you'll have a good chance of throwing him off feed and you don't want that at this juncture. You'll need to be aware of shrink at weigh in time though. You may want to hold him off water for a short time before weigh in and make sure to fill him up before hitting the scale. Water him at home in a bucket several days before weigh in so that he gets use to drinking from a bucket. You may want to bring water from home to water him with because he's use to that water. Good luck !!

The Big Show / Re: Head shape job

Jconner, you are right, I think you and Knabe are talking about two different things. I think what Knabe is suggesting or asking is why not dehorn them one way or another on day one? I've dehorned 100 plus calves over the years with a scissors, a tongue depressor, and a $10 bottle of dehorning paste. Once in a great while the cow will lick the paste off but not very often and you would not be able to tell that they were born horned hardly ever. I have never used the other method that Knabe was referring to but I'm sure it would give you similar results. what do they charge for a surgical dehorn/head shape job these days if you don't mind sharing? Thanks.

Mark have you seen a video of this bull? I have to ask because he looks pretty straight rear legged to me in that picture anyway. I would be skeptical without seeing him move or know someone well that has seen him move. JMO

Milking ability is only 20% hereditary. I don't know for sure what the percentages are for udder quality and teat size. Just guessing I would say more inheritable than milking ability. That is strictly a guess though.

Firewater probably not good for dispositions. Some of them have plenty of attitude!! I've had some good Bohannons and Diablos.

To my knowledge most IVF protocols are not using FSH. I may be mistaken though. ;)

Any chance of you putting up a short video of your calf on the move? May could either confirm or possibly illuminate the spastic paresis for you.

Kinda late to the party Steve. I really don't have much to add other than I did buy a bit of McKinley & Burwell. Won't get calves until June and late Setp.

The Big Show / Re: Skin

Dandruff is usually caused by a fungus called Malassezia so yes it may be worth a shot. That's why Sullivan's make Fungus Fighter. Another to approach it would be to get some Fulvison capsules for your calves. one treatment usually works to rip them of ringworm but 2 are recommended. Ringworm is also caused by a fungus. Good luck. Also maybe just run a stinky old goat buck in with em. The old timers say that a rank Billy goat will keep calves from ever getting ringworm and a lot of feedlots have a billy running in their lots.
