Thanks Sue! Athena produced until she was over 13 years old and one of her best flushes was her last the winter before she died. The Thelma cow family is pretty touted in Australia as real performers from what I have heard. I think these bulls are pretty special and unique..

Can you tell me about this Athena cow? I haven't heard of the Thelma family...

The Big Show / Re: Angus Bull Sires Scurred calf
« on: February 13, 2013, 07:35:23 PM »
This Past weekend we had the cows up to freeze brand them and then we blacklegged and did some other stuff to the calves. Anyhow, while running the calves through the chute I noticed that one of the bull calves out of our Reg. Angus herd bull (a Spartan Son) is scurred, the calf's dam is scurred as well (both individuals have very small scurrs). It just surprised me because I had always heard that Angus bulls will always sire polled calves.

Does anyone else know anymore on the topic or had this happen?

Simple- the infusion of Friesian genetics (predominantly) during the "frame craze" to lift the breed from their belt-buckle size.

It actually goes further back to Shorthorn calving ease... Our cows aren't as big as some might believe (lol)

Just repeating for good measure....  (:))

32 and 30 are my picks... I think 32 is the "stand out" when you first look over them, and 30 looks like a promising sire (structurally he appears better according to the photos)... who's he by?

You've confused yourself again, we are the Mighty Mouse club

When is Jason shipping out your Mousekateir Hats and are they personalized?

We should have asked him to do such!!! What we agreed on was matching Footie Pajamas, and Mouse ears.... I think we are proud of our uniform

It's funny that the first thing you say when you are considering him a "calving ease sire" is his babies birth weights and not the shape of his babies. (lol)  I know next to nothing about him, so I can't comment on it.  I would ask around and see what people that have used him and on what kind of cows/heifers he was used to see if he may or may not be "calving ease."  I guess that teerm means different things to different people.

Absolutely! Birthweight should be the number 1 criteria for evaluating calving ease.  There are no 120lb calves that come easy.  Any heifer that can't calve a 60lber didn't pass her pelvic exam.  When the largest calf recorded out of him is 88lbs, I will hang my hat on him as a low (enough) bw bull to use on heifers.  The bull had an 80lb bw in CANADA.  I calved out over 20 heifers this year to 2 'unproven' bulls w/ a 100% live calf rate- 1 pull.  Under your direction, what was your calf crop's survival rate, again?

There's no point having an 80lb calf if it's shoulders are wide open. Calf shape is much more important than weight.

TDU, don't you Aussies regard/treat the New Zealanders the same as the Americans regard/treat the Canadians?

Damn straight!

I read somewhere that all Canadians are related and if you go back far enough, you'll find Super Flag.

Alas it must be true then <beer>

And of course, Super Flag was an Aussie........ it all falls into place  (pop)
