The Big Show / Re: Smart phone app's

Working Ranch Magazine's last issue had a great article with a page of great apps for cattle, both for iPhone and androids.

I should still have it and will try to scan that page or list them.

Sounds like she's on the good side of extreme, could be worse, but maybe pictures will help us analyze her more.

What are they made like, and how uniform is the group?

They are a fairly uniform group, mostly medium framed cattle.  One female needs a little extra muscle and depth to her but the others are nice and I think bred right will make great club calves.

I have a nice group of Balancer first calf heifers that I'm considering trying something different with.  We raise Simmental cross cattle and bought these females to use as recips but their calves are nice and I'm thinking about trying a few different bulls on them to see what works.

Any suggestions on how to breed them?  Any breed or bull is on the table at this point for them.

Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

The Big Show / Re: Bull Got His Head Stuck
« on: January 01, 2013, 07:43:58 PM »
You got lucky. I wasn't as fortunate. Several years ago , I bought the Willard Keith herd in KY. There was several bulls included in the package , one of which was a bull called JJ Denim. Willard had bought 1/2 of him from Doc Freed for like $10k. We would use him 1 year at a time then rotate. One year while he was at my house he got to rubbing his neck in the fork of a sweet gum tree and got it stuck. I ended up having to cut the tree down with him trapped in the fork. Got him free but he immediately went down and couldn't get him up. He ate food for 2 days then died. That was a tough call to make, to let Doc Freed know.

We had a similar situation with a Reg. Angus bull several years ago.  Found him stuck, hadn't been there but a few hours but had injured himself trying to get free.  We got him loose and he died the next day.

I have two straws of Red Reality, guess it's been 5+ yrs since we bred anything to him.  I have a red Built Rigt daughter who just calved and I'm thinking of breeding her to him.

Any thoughts on Red Reality?

Thanks for the info.  I have paid guys to help with hay, mowing, etc but it's easier when it's a 4 hrs one day or all day for 5 days straight.  This will just be riding by checking cows and feeding everyday.  Only a few minutes each day.

I've talked to him and think we have something worked out, thanks again for the advice!

I have never had help on the farm, but am considering having someone help us feed and do some farm chores for us.  It would only be an hour a day at the most, but really most days only long enough to feed in one or two barns.

I know a guy looking for odd jobs and work who said he would be glad to help, but what does something like this pay, or what should it pay?

Good news, the semen I really wanted from the tank was ok!  Some of the semen was no good but we gave the straws to our local high school to he AI process.

McCullough, Stierwalt and others have fitting DVD's too that can be helpful, they were to me anyway.  Only problem is you are not in front of the animal when you watch them.

Also, the Virginia Club Calf Producers, www.virginiaclubcalfproducers.com, had Kirk Stierwalt do a fitting demonstration last year at their Winter Classic in January.  2012 dates are January 27-29.  Not sure if they will have a demo this year or not, but they did last year.  It was so cold that adhesive cans were in warm water buckets to thaw out.

Anyway, hope that helps!  There are several great fitters along the east coast too that would probably be willing to work with your nephew!  Best of luck!

The Big Show / Bad Straws
« on: September 25, 2011, 08:16:23 PM »
I recently got several straws of semen from a local farmer who was getting rid of his tank.  Haven't used the first straw but this weekend I happened to pull out one cane and noticed that every straw in that cane had somewhat of a black tent to it at the very end.  Didn't take any of the straws out of the cane, just put them right back down.

My thought is that these straws have been thawed and refroze, or they the tank ran dry and then was recharged only to cause frost bite in the ends of these straws.  Is that what this is?

Do you think this cane has any quality in it whatsoever?

Is anyone using Stierwalt's new product line from Weaver?  Looks like they are promoting them hard but everyone I know is still using what they have been.
