1952 International Steer Judge
« on: July 06, 2017, 03:37:06 PM »
Anyone know who judged the steers in Chicago in 1952 when this Ohio State calf, Ohio's Leader 2nd was champion and considered the model for all breeds?

Herman Purdy showed him and later judged the show. I thought the Purdue University Champion in 1941 was the model of champions?

I thought Herman Purdy was at Penn State.  I guess that doesn't mean he couldn't have shown a steer for Ohio State.  Perhaps Woody Hayes would have helped coach Franco Harris in return?  I remember Mr. Purdy showed PS Nonpareil 27 (I think that's the correct number) that won the International for Penn State in the early 60's.  I always thought PS Troubadour was the epitome of the past as far as show steers went.

I did a little digging and found Herman was the judging team coach at Ohio State at least from 46 to 53, so he well could have been at the halter of this one. From Steve's comment, sounds likely he judged some of the breeding stock classes at the same show.

Herman Purdy was at Penn State from '54 to '72. I can't recall the year Troubadour was shown but can find out next time I'm in the office. I do recall that Henry Gruber took Troubadour on his national train tour following the show. Guess that was sort of a tradition for Chicago Champions in those days?

Here's Troubadour
It's all about the kids.

Here's and article I found about Herman Purdy from 1964 when he judged the International.  The column under his picture cites the info that I had on him.
