This is my son's first year in 4-H and he wanted to take Market Goats. How much cover should they have?  Right now they are weighing 80-85 our fair is in August, they just seem a little hard to me, but I have never even been aroud goats before, steers are our thing.  I have been told to treat them like a steer, but we never "ran" our steers...lol  Any hints would be greatly appreciated!!  Thank You (dog)

For cover, over their ribs should feel like the top of your hand if you rub it.  If it feels like your knuckles it is too light and if it feels like over the first part of your finger it is too heavy.  80-85lbs is a pretty good weight to show at, I wouldn't want them much over 95 lbs.  A good side-dress for the next 30-45 days helps a bunch, Grand Goat is good.  Running is good, but be careful  in the heat, a big heat-stress or two can ruin the best of them and take the muscle shape right out of them.  Other than that, yeah, they're just like steers  ;)  Good luck.
