Hi!! So about 30 minutes ago my heifers that was 5 months bred aborted a beautiful little bull calf. Her discharge was pink and it has yellow chunks dripping down it!! I was thinking maybe infection!! I don't know why this happened and I am very upset about it  :'(

The vet is coming out today to look the situation over.....however we went to a show with her last weekend and we were thinking maybe someone slipped her some lute

If you guys have any idea why this happened it would really help me feel better.

Thank you!!

Sorry to hear.  How far was the trip to the show? Did she get banged around on the trailer ride any? How hot was the weather ?

It was a 4 hour ride, no she didn't get banged around she has been hauled to like 6-7 other shows without any issues. We hauled her at like 3:00 in the morning and it was 70 degrees the whole ride... They also get hay and can lay down on the way of they want to!  :)

We sent the calf to get have a necropsy done and sent off the placenta and blood too. Hopefully we get down to the bottom of this  :'(

She still hasn't passed the placenta and the vet only got a little bit out to send to the lab. She was given oxytocin, lute, and exede.

Thank you guys  <beer>

Also, the vet said she doesn't think it was lute and I didn't think so either, but she is a multiple time grand champion and some people don't like that.... Lol.... So it is always an option!

It's always the good ones.

I don't see a location, and it could be any number of things, but Lepto and anaplas ran wild in some areas last fall.

You are taking the right approach to send samples and blood for a diagnosis.  Your Veterinarian will probably want a convalescent blood sample to look for changes in antibody titers.  The disappointing thing about abortions,  about 70% never have a positive diagnosis,  so don't get  your hopes up for a definative answer.    Be sure your vaccinations are up to date and all recommended boosters have been administered.

I am in Florida.. Yes it always has to be the good one  ::)

She is up to date on vaccinations

I know I probably won't figure it out, but it's disappointing because she ages out soon and I would have been able to show her as a cow calf pair at her last show  :'(  She would have dominated with a calf on her side!

Thank you guys soooo much for your help and support!!  (thumbsup)

Would be highly unlikely that lut would result in abortion in a pregnancy greater than 100 days, typically requires a steroid as well.
Best chance at a diagnosis is blood sample of the cow, placenta, and fetus to diagnostic lab. Still only maybe 50/50 chance at diagnosis

My money's riding on it being a Neospora abortion.
That said, by submitting maternal blood sample, fetus, and (most importantly, in most cases!) PLACENTA, you've increased the likelihood of getting a diagnosis.
But... as a veterinary diagnostic pathologist(retired), I can tell you that abortion/stillbirth cases are frustrating and disappointing, for producer, veterinarian, and diagnostic lab personnel... definitive diagnosis in probably less than 25% of cases, but submission of placenta greatly increases probability of finding the cause... but year-in/year-out, we probably only received placenta on maybe 10-15% of cases... either the cow/dogs/coyotes/buzzards had eaten it, or it was still in the cow (as she disappeared over the hill)... or the producer just didn't think to grab it.

So... This is a never ending battle... I'm 90% sure she didn't pass the rest of the placenta and now has discharge again! Should I give her more oxytocin? She has developed a little udder too.

Thanks

So the lab results are back........ The lead they are following is rhinotracheitis virus! We are sending it to another lab to get confirmation that that is what it is...

We are vaccinating everything tomorrow.

I'm glad we found something out!!!

Talk to your vet, they'll probably have you give some Lut ( if you haven't already) to help her clean. Also may have to flush the uterus with water . Dilution is the solution to pollution.
But, like I said, ask your vet

Cool phrase. I may steal that.
