Any thoughts on Red Simmental Bulls out there

Would prefer a Dream On Outcross.

Other than the Gunner/ Top Gun lines are there any good onese out there?  Also what do you think of either Gunner or Top Gun calves?

I of course like Mack but would prefer not to pay $200 on anything completely unproven at this point.

You may want to consider Red Iron.  He is a 2007 model red bull that is a complete outcross to Dream On and is very moderate and thick.  He is an ABS bull.  A bunch of the heifers in Kris Black's sale this year were bred to Red Iron.

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

I like Red Iron and WS Beef Maker - but both go back to Legacy G151 on the top side, just 2 or 3 generations back; G151 is Dream On's sire, so I don't know that I'd call either of them an 'outcross' to Dream On.
Beef Maker gets the nod from me for slightly higher WW, higher Mrb/REA, and better API/TI values - but I'm a commercial producer, not interested in the showring.
Currently using a hetero black son of Shear Force, Hooks Pharoah 16P on some heifers; no red calves yet, but it's a 25-50% possibility.

Still have a soft spot in my heart for the Fleckvieh cattle - would still use Sir Arnold G809, if I had the semen.  The Big Sky bull at ABS brings some Fleckvieh influence(Siegfried) to the mix, and would work here.

Very limited sample size, but I like our Beefmakers.  The handful of Top Gun's that we've had are just not pretty enough for me.

Beef maker vs Red Iron....Beef maker seems to have a slight edge in the epd category, but red Iron seems to be right there with him in a smaller frame?? Anybody use them both that cares to compare calves?

Own a beef maker son for a herd bull and all but one of our Simmental bulls in our sale are sons of him.  Love my Beef Makers.

Not quite 2 months ago, we trashed over 100 straws of red Simmental semen that's been accumulated over the past 20 years.  I could give you names and codes if you want for a good starting place with something older than current.

I have two straws of Red Reality, guess it's been 5+ yrs since we bred anything to him.  I have a red Built Rigt daughter who just calved and I'm thinking of breeding her to him.

Any thoughts on Red Reality?

I hate to sound like a broken record but I'll do it anyway. I own part interest in this upcoming red Simmental bull, Hook's Yukon 80Y. Top 2% API and top 1% TI. I attached a picture of him and his dam at 10 years old.
ASA #: 2612543
His semen should be available through Select Sires soon.

An up and comer and half sibling to Yukon Hooks expectation 36x.  He is a bull that I may use as a heifer bull for years if he keeps headed in the right direction.

No doubt he might have something to offer, but many would cringe at his BW and CE EPDs.  Hard to sell any Simmi bulls around here with those kind of numbers, even though Angus or RA with far worse CE will sell no problem. Whatever.  ???

I tried Traxs Rushmore (ABS) and got a pretty good heifer out of the deal.  I would prefer a bit more bone and she has more leather than some would prefer but she is a brick, without losing femininity.  Used him again this year. Interested to see how she pans out as a cow.

No G151.

We've used Amigo, they are just so so. Good calving ease, but we sure do not like what he did to the udder on the heifer. Her dam has the most perfect udder (she is a Hummer), and the Amigo calf has really long nipples that are big. She is nursing her first calf this year, and really sucking down on weight and her calf is little. So, I do not think we will use him again. Bull calves seem to lack power for us also.
Like an earlier poster said, it depends on what your goals are. Red Iron calves look good, and we like the Beef Maker calves. We bred our angus heifers to Beef maker, we will see in about 3 weeks how they look. I really like the looks of LN's bull, Yukon. I am eagerly looking forward to some pictures soon. Same with Homeboy.

The birth weight on the Yankee bull is a bit of a problem but it is manageable for a purebred breeder if bred to the right cows.  Your Birth weight EPDs will not go sky high if you think ahead and don't use hi on high BW EPD cows.  Tne big problem is just about all the solid red and black simmentals go back to the same stock if you go back far enough.  This bull offers a way out of the trap of no genetic variation. Plus he has no Angus in him.

Mark, you are correct on the birth weight for the Yankee bull.  I actually look more at the calving ease number if the accuracy is high enough as that gives a better idea of the calf's confirmation than birth weight.  I'll take the higher weight if it comes easy enough.  The old Siimy bull Eagle was considered a top 10% calving ease bull in his day and he is + 3.2# birth weight with + 4.8 calving ease with is now in the 90% of the breed.  They really have come a long way.
Older reds that would make good calves are GW-CPL Red Alert for purebred and PRL Porthouse Regent for fullblood
