Thanks so much for all of the responses! You have all definitely given me something to think about. Steve123-I have never considered contacting a seller after the fact to let them know that I am still interested if the sale falls through, but it's a great idea.

The sellers bid on their calves until they think it is a good price.  The only down fall of that is if they buy their own calves, they still have to pay the 6-7% commission.  And also the representative of the sale website is at your house when the sale goes off (only if you pay the extra 1-2% commission) and they can see who is bidding the whole time.  Its risky but sometimes its worth it.
