I'm a little new to this Cow/Calf operation, having raised feeder calves for quite some time.  I have two bull calves this year out of good blood lines, one being a Dream on Donor Cow x Silverias Style and the other is a purebred Simmy out of my In Dew Time cowl.  What do most people take into consideration when choosing to steer these calves vs selling them as bulls?  I have a guy who asked me about the Dream On x Silverias Style calf to run on his heard, he is a very sharp looking calf.

Thanks in advance for opinions/advice.

Kinda sounds like you've got a couple good pedigrees in your calves. I guess I wouldn't hesitate leaving them as bulls as long as they move well and have some depth of body , muscle , and of course eye appeal ! Really tough to say without seeing them .

The first thing I always think about is "would I use him as a herd bull?"  There is no such thing as "just a clean up bull" in my opinion.  If I would use a bull it better be because I think he could do the majority of my cow herd some good.  By that I mean he has the attributes that I feel would help to improve my own cows... maternal characteristics such as but not limited to great feet, not just ok or kind decent feet.  Must be very sound on his legs, big testicles, soft made, easy fleshing, masculent, come from cows that are exceptional producers in all aspects, come from a strong cow family that has from a long line of good cows.  Popular pedigree or well known pedigree does not mean as much, like in the shorty breed, we need outcrosses but ones that still come from a good cow family even if it isn't well known to many others.
I try to ask myself this because if you are going to sell someone a bull that bull will go out and be a representative of your program and what you stand for.  He had better be something you can be proud of owning yourself.  If you like them, and there is some solid history behind them...go for it.

How do their EPD's look? With Simmi's, EPD's are a valuable tool. We first look at the EPD's, then look at the phenotype. They have to have good milk numbers and good calving ease to stay a bull at our place.
