We had our first calf of 2013 this afternoon (pic below)
an unassisted bull calf out of a former show heifer (this was her first calf)
Anyhow we use the year code to start the names of the calves and since this year is "A" was wanting to solicit some name suggestions.

We have never been to the IA Expo :( would like to one day but probably not this year

and this calf would have Rulon on both sides too since Asphalt is a Rulon son.

& We were hoping this calf would be a heifer. We sold its sire last year and this is the only calf that we will have out of him. Also we have pretty high expectations for this female. Thomas and Sons won the NAILE Jr show and was Res. in the open show with a maternal sib to her a couple of years ago.

We also name calves using the year letter designation, and this is what I do... First, I go to Thesaurus.com and type in a word or a name I want to name the calf after, such as the sire or dam's name. Then just look for words in the rests that start with that letter. "Yahoo" should give you something to go on...

I also use a dictionary and I use the Internet to search for baby names that start with the letter A as well as other names or words beginning with the letter I'm using, depending on the direction I want to go... Examples: Flowers that start with letter A; songs that start with letter A; foods that start with letter A... You get my drift.

Some calves get fun names. Some get more serious names. It just depends.

I too am looking forward tithe next few years of naming babies. It hasn't been fun since the U babies!

Congrats on the new calf.  There all exciting.  Personally, I don't follow the letter rule.  I try to find names that are strong, capture the essence and may use the sire's name...but another way is to look at songs that begin the letter:

Abacab - Genesis
Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band
Adrenaline - Shinedown
All Shook Up - Elvis Presley
Answer Me - Frankie Laine
Are You Ready - Thin Lizzy
As I Am - Dream Theater
At Last - Etta James

For example...

We have taken name suggestions from multiple sources and have narrowed it down to 15 options for the bull calf 160A (CMCN Yahoo 147Y x EXLR Black Cap 160X). Your votes are appreciated!

1 ) Ace of Spades
2 ) All American
3 ) All In
4 ) All Star
5 ) Amen
6 ) American Dream
7 ) Ace in the Hole
8 ) Army of One
9 ) Assassin
10 ) Aristotle
11 ) Axle
12 ) Aftershock
13 ) Admiral
14 ) Aristocrat
15 ) Amazon

* Yes I do realize that some of these names are used by club calf bulls or bulls of other breeds but this is a Limousin calf and thus shouldn't be a source of confusion.

Are you asking us to vote?... From this list, I like Aristocrat. 2nd choice would be Admiral.

While you're probably right that the cross over from other breeds wouldn't be a major issue--especially not unless your bull was promoted or campaigned. I would still try to be more original than that. At least don't borrow a name from a relatively popular bull or a bull somebody else is currently promoting. Assassin would be a great name for a bucking bull!
