We have not been allowed to do calfhood vaccinations in Canada for probably 20 years ( maybe more!). For a few years after they disallowed it here, we were allowed to export test our heifers, take them into the US and have them calfhood vaccinated, then bring them back into Canada a few hours later. It took them a few years to even figure out how to close this loop hole and we only went this trouble because it allowed us to sell cattle to many more US states,.
We used to do it religiously, but then our federal vets decided it was creating too many false positive reactors. There are lots of US states that do not require heifers to be calfhood vaccinated any more and we sell lots of non vaccinates to these states. For example, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas do not require it, just to name a few. I find it a bit odd that many of these same states require absolutely no health tests for cattle to enter them from other states or from Canada. I have sold cattle to Texas on a few occasions and only had to have an export health paper filled out and signed. In one case, a Texas breeder purchased a show heifer from us, and while he visited another herd in the area, I got the export papers and he loaded her and headed back to the US. The main states that still require calfhood vaccinations done are those like N Dakota, Montana,Colorado, Wyoming as well as several other Mid west and western states.
The main difference between Canada and the US in regards to health requirements is here in Canada, we have basically the same health requirements in all parts of the country ( with some exceptions in regards to Manitoba and TB testing). In the US, each state has it's own set of rules and it is often frustrating when I have to contact a state vet office to find out what I need to do, to sell cattle to that state. I am not kidding when I say that in some cases, I have phoned a state vet office and they could not even tell me what their requirements were!! This has happened to me 3 times in the past 2 years, and it is very frustrating to say the least.
