cannot keep our heifer inside the fence

she has been leaning on the fence and snapping off the clips and going under the fence. We added two strands of electric wire to the top and bottom about 5" inches from the top/bottom and she continues to get out. Any suggestions?

She may have gotten used to the LOW voltage fencer at some point, and now just doesn't care.

Have you checked your fence for being "" H O T "", it should spark at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch or better when you lay a plastic handled hammer against the post itself and then slowly angle it toward the wire. It should really snap.

I have never had any luck with the braided wire though, it has to be smooth and about 12-14 gage to work the best. The horse wire stuff is OK for horses, but cows are another story.

Check your fence at it's farthest from the fencer, and if doesn't spark really hood, meybe you should invest in one that will knock her socks off !! hehehe

It doesn't take long when they get a good hot shock before they quit trying it!

Good luck -- some times you really have to burn em once really good for it to sink in!

we did recently change chargers. we had a 10 mile charger for fencing in about a half acre. a quarter of the wire is 5 strand and the rest of the way around is 2 strand with woven wire fence. We now have a 100 mile fence charger on it. it is also the smooth wire. i will try the hammer trick. Thanks.

Not sure if they still make them, but see if you can find an old school 110V fence charger.

is your ground wet?  put a hose to your grounding rod or install another one if your ground is dry.

what I discovered about electric fence chargers recently.

Had a heifer that could find dead spot every time. When I ran the fence it was all okay. We have some in a woods and deer bust it from time to time. So I did the "pitch fork" test and post. I noticed I was loosing charge with a 50 mile charger. What I discovered is when I made a complete circuit and the wire went all the way around and looped back on itself the charge was hot hot. When it ran in a straight line it wasn't near as powerful. So we ran wire and completed it so it is running from one side of the pasture to the other with no breaks. Maybe I am crazy. But it works fine now.
Barb wire has always helped us keep hogs that like to root and cows that like to push the bottom of a fence. You can run it along the woven wire. You can electrify it makes it even better of deterant.
