Jason, I think it would be pretty simple but a breeding app that could be like a spread sheet would be great. That you can enter in the date you AI'd what cows/heifers to what bull that has the gestation date built in where it would know the date and would count it down and tell you how many days you have left for projected due date when ever you opened the app. But I think that would be a great app that would help keep breeding organized. Thanks

This would be great but then if you went one step further and you can "Id" the progeny and keep weights and general info it would suit my needs, because then I could go into my regular software on my PC. Simplicity at its finest, or at least it looks that way on paper.

I agree Mtnman, that would help a lot also, rite now I do everything by pen and paper, would be awesome to have an app keep track off all that breeding information.

Would the data have to be available if you did NOT have cell (data) service?

I guess I asking do you routinely not have data service on your phone in the field or other areas where you would be using the app.

I think Cattlemax does most of all of this, but obviously their software is way more in-depth.  His switch to online software, in my opinion, will be a huge advantage in the future as he can integrate the data between multiple devices and operating systems.

I know he is going to build a dedicated app in the future.

I was going to build a gestation calculator, but could maybe integrate some very simple filesystem storage that would allow you to save the tag #, sire, and bred date.

Cattle Visions has a calculator app.  You can enter a breeding date and it gives you the calving date or you can enter a desired calving date and it gives you the date to breed. Simple, but kinda handy.

We have tried the cattlemax this year, I guess my only problem is loading it out in the field. 9 times out of 10 we dont have good enough service and it takes forever to load everything. So what we have been doing is writing everything down and then at night putting it into the computer...

I would personally like to see something similar to that in a app. A gestation calculator would be great tool and the file storage deal would be great start! I would make it so you can email it to yourself or have a way for it to be pulled up on your home computer and printed out. Basically like the spreedsheet app, I've tried that one also and it works but there is a lot of work involved in putting your info in it...

Some people may get a kick out of this but I thought it might work: I have an iphone and while I was out on the 4 wheeler tagging calves I tired to have siri make a note of which ones I tagged and the sex of the calf and have her email it to me, thinking this would be the easiest and best way to do it on the go and I didnt have to take my gloves off constantly... Well siri not so smart and didn't understand what I wanted her to do. Pissed me off and I ended up writing everything down,  BUT if you could come up with a voice activation thing built in the app and it took in the details you wanted I think you would have something big! Just a thought haha <rock>

I almost never have data service at the ranch, too many hills between towers. I tell people to text me cause that will go through but I always loose cell service while trying to talk to someone on my cell at the ranch. That is why an app would be great. I could use the above app you are talking about, even if you could just add a general info spot with the above you posted (tag #, sire of calf, bred date), then we could add what ever we wanted in that spot, birth weight, calving difficulty, days over gestation, general details about the calf, medications given to the calf, etc.

That I is what I figured on cell service.  It is getting better, but still gaps and obviously natural barriers present a problem.  So it would be stored locally in a file or a sql db.

Yeah, I laugh at my dad using SIRI, never seems to get it exactly right.  Android has something very similar, but I don't use it much.

I have tried a couple of different apps. that work okay and in general not much more than a spread sheet. I like the idea of the gestation calculator and the general data area. I think a simple app that doesn't need cell service and gives you the opportunity or convince to keep your breeding data and/or general herd info will be extremely handy. I would be happy to pay for an app that did these things as long as it didn't get out of hand.

I have been looking close at the new windows 8 phone and windows 8 os and the ability to transfer data and sync. I know it will be a while before it really becomes fool proof but I like what they are doing and I think the phone will be outstanding when they get more apps..

After constantly trying to do the math, would be nice to have an app that you put in your target AI date, and what synch protocol you want to use (always 7 day CIDR for us), and it figures what times to put CIDR's in, pull CIDR's and give shots, etc.

That wouldn't be that hard to build, might not be aesthetically pretty, but I can make something functional.
