Class project about concealed carry on college campuses
« on: December 07, 2011, 01:35:13 PM »
My girlfriend was assigned a group project in a communication class. Her group deceded to put together a presentaton addressing the carring of concealed weapons on college campuses. The presentation is posted on youtube and the group needs 500 views to recieve an A for the project. It would be awesome if everyone could check the video out and help them reach their goal. Plus I thought it might lead to some interesting discussion. Thanks!

The video is displaying correctly.  It is virtually impossible to give a youtube link, because I have turned on essentially a word filter that adds the embed code around the link.

you can click on the link within the video (in the upper left corner) or go here by clicking twice to go to a non-embedded version.

My daughter is a freshman at Liberty University in Virginia.    They just declared the campus as CCW friendly.   Makes the tuition costs a little less painful  ;)

Other than what they talked about in the video I was unaware that this was even being considered at any colleges. I could see how it would make you feel safer about your daughter, if she is from a farm background im sure she knows how to handle one. My concern is that there are a lot of college students that can't handle and probably dont need the responsibility of carrying something that can take a life. Im a sophomore at Morehead State University in Eastern Kentucky. We have a police post on campus, a city police, and a state police post less than two miles from campus, so ive never felt that safety was an issue.

This is how old I am.

When I was in college I remember taking our shotguns into our dorm rooms so no one would steel them out of our cars. We had taken them to go Dove hunting.

Another time I remember a friend had just bought a "six gun" replica and holster and gun belt. There was a full length mirror at the end of the hall and we would all take turns standing in front of it practicing "quick draw." No one thought the first thing about it. Normal. Everyone that walked by, girls and guys, wanted to try it. Times have changed.

So the college students aren't responsible enough to carry a weapon but they are responsible enough to vote that no one else can carry a weapon?

Sorry, but if I was the professor I would not give them an "A" because they showed their bias in their report and went out to show that their point of view was correct while not representing or discussing the other sides view adequately.

Exactly, I am sure 99% who would go through the ccw class would be alright however the 1% would scare me to death.  I remember when it was no big deal to have your shotgun sitting in your backwindow of your truck when you went to school.  If you did it now you would have swat tackling you in class.  I can understand why, especially after columbine and Virginia tech.

I would not for one second criticize anyone who chooses not to carry a weapon.  However, the fear some express toward those who do is completely unfounded. The facts are that crimes using firearms are not committed by those with CCW permits.

I know this: any group of cowardly and deranged boys planning to shoot up a campus - and it's just a matter of time - will take Liberty University off their list.  Trust me, they want nothing to do with an immediate and equally lethal response from the sheep they wish to slaughter.  The police response they both anticipate and accept.  It is the 5 to 10 minutes of unimpeded and unresisted killing that they desire.  An armed citizenry does not offer them the opportunity.

but you have to realize, on those two occasions...

those who keep the guns in the back window.. have FOID Cards, and the know how of what to do...  Those who did the shooting, I'm guessing didn't have the permission to own the gun in the first place, let alone take it in...

Irregardlesss of what kind of rules schools put in place.  if somebody is going to go in and blast a bunch of people they don't like, they're going to do it regardless of whether or not school banned it (the gun)...

True.  The video wasn't very objective, so probably shouldn't receive an "A" if it was for a mass communications (journalism) class.  Although alot of "news reporters" are very biased anymore.

As far as concealed carry permits...I've got one.  I don't carry all the time and there are states that don't recognize other state's permits, so I have to be aware of that.  I'll have to say, none of the people in my carry class worry me in the least carrying a weapon.  The one's that scare me are the ones  without a permit.

Diddo on all of that... A lot of news reporters are biased because the biased professor gave them A's if they did things the way the professor wanted them to. Meanwhile, brains are being manipulated. Anybody realize there was another shooting on the campus of Virgina Tech today?

I think that there was more to the presentation in class than just the video, I think it was only a visual aid. So some of the other side and opposing views were probably addressed orally during the presentation. I realize that most people in college are basically adults and are probably responsible enough to carry a fire arm. However it only takes the one person with a short temper to get caught in an angry blur and shoot someone or one accidental misfire to take a life. I feel safer having a fully staffed campus police department and a state police post near by. I do support concealed carry. I just think that guns don't belong in certain places that are densely populated or where emotions commonly run high, for example college campuses, hospitals, court houses. These places, in my opinion, should be policed by trained professionals.
