Looking for suggestions

Low birth weight would be nice

Hoping for steer prospects first, maternal qualities second

I would hope for a live, healthy calf first and a heifer not all tore up.  There really isn't a second.

If you want straight angus calves go with Nothern Improvement.  For crosses Breathe Easy, Grizzly, I 80.  The Torrington bull that Lautner has may be good also but wait to hear about calving reports on him this spring since it's his first calf crop.

Wait another or maybe 2 to breed them for big clubbys.  They still got some growin yet.

Should be number 1 concern

Breed those heifers mothers for those goals.. not virgins.

I am not sure Clubby and Heifer should necessarily be in the same sentence. BUT, there are some bulls that are XX bred that are consistent for calving ease. I know Total Solution has been a go to for consistent calving ease selection. Some of the Ali son's have worked out to be calving ease that Lautner has in his line up. But you have to choose something that will set these females up for a productive future. If you end up with a c-section on the first run that is not the way to start out.

I have had great success with
Northern Improvement
SS Traveler T510
Gizmo

Full Form. Daughters are better than the bulls but they will work either way.
If I had a group of angus hiefers I would go low BW simmi and make F1s  and then go on them with the clubbys bulls.

There are some young bulls that they say are calving ease...the following are calving ease sires that are proven:

Jessie James - muscular, correct by Total Solution (Who Made Who) and 27.44% Chi - Lautner, Bovine Elite, etc.

Dirty Harry 2 (75% Maine) - Lautner
Tyson (PB Maine) - Lautner

Time Saver - Double bred Who - by Tycoon and out of a 3D x WAG Hairietta cow - Select Sires

Maybe try I-90 as he is a TH carrier which has no affect on your angus cows and will provide them with some hair. Next If your up for a gamble as I am, I am trying Lautners new calving ease bull Maternally yours. I cliiped on a grizzly x northern improvement steer last year. big  framed not enough power and no hair. got killed at the jackpots. If you want proven, I would go with Jesse James!

Most of the bulls people are talking about are unproven.  Yes they have small birth weights.  Yes, someone had told them that they are supposed to be calving ease bulls.  Truth is, the first calves came from the a controlled environment.  This will be the first year for I-80 calves from a broad array of cattle bred all around the US.  I-67's first crop is just hitting the ground.  I-90 and Maternally Yours are the same age as your heifers.  Ali's Solution's first calves are coming now.  Are these bulls worth your good heifers?

Read my earlier post:  Jesse James (I'm using him), Dirty Harry 2  & Tyson.  Time Saver should throw nice heifers.

For Angus, have you seen:
Vin-Mar O'Reilly Factor 9536 (Cattle Visions)- CE +9
PA Safeguard 021 (ABS, Bovine Elite)- CE +12
Both with the phenotype right for the ring.

Clubby steers & young hfrs DO NOT GO TOGETHER! Save yourself a lot of headaches and breed them to a prooven low bw Angus bull.  Every company has a bunch of them to choose from. Pick one that is prooven & has the look you are going for and in about two years think about what clubby bull you want to use on those same cows.  Everything is too expensive to loose calves much less the the cow.  Get a light, live and healthy calf on the ground  & you've had a successfull year.

A friend of mine used Damage Control and The Ringer on 20 head of maine x angus heifers and just got done calving them, he never touched one of them but they were under tight control. Very nice calves though.
