Since it is the off year in Denver and the nationals are in Louisville I just wondered how things would be handled. Is the pen show affected by it being a off year?

The whole Shorty deal at Denver will be effected by the off year. They may not even have that sale. L'ville will be huge !

Maybe they ought to put a Durham Red sale together for Denver. Commercial guys as buyers mainly?

That could be a neat deal.  It might get some different people looking at all the good shorthorn genetics from a different aspect of what the breed has to offer.

From the barn talk I have heard, it seems some "personalities"  in the shorties are ruining things....  I know personally I will never deal with certain people in the shortie breed (not little pups either), and I doubt if I spend any more money in the shortie breed.... wish I known then, what I have been told now.

There are those people in every breed that ruin things for everyone.  As a shorthorn breeder I would like to say sorry, but please dont lump all of us into one group.  I bet everyone on here can show you someone or a few people in their breeds that are screwing things up.  I really hope that you look past those few people and dont disregard a whole breed.

Like Davis said, unfortunate about your deal. Always a few turds in the punch bowl to ruin the party  for everyone. Wonder why shorties can't catch a break. For evry step some of us take forward, somebody else takes 4 steps back. Personally I think shorties should adopt the same thing as the red angus. No paper without the data on ALL the calves.

AJ.
From what I could see in May you dont need a national sale to sell RAX SH bulls. I think you could load about 10 and go. Enter 15 head and sell bulls on Fri and Saturday. I would price them and say "pay the lady in the corner" .  Uniformity is what sells pen bulls and I could see that at your place- most want 1/2 brothers to turn out and most other SH breeders will not have that to offer. You have paid attention to birthweights and if you have a pic of your RA sire then game over. AJs calves were heavy at 60 days of age- big deep bodied masculine babies.
Please dont wait for ASA to "get behind Durham Red" . They do not even mention it on the web page any more. Sorry, do I sound bitter? I bet I counted over 300 hd of SH X Angus cross calves from one trip that will not be registered... it's the most profitable portion of most commerical Shorthorn breeders and they dont need a paper to sell it. It's like everyone knows profit except ASA? ooops  blowing off steam but i flat love this cross.

Sue.....I am kinda with you. Durham reds don't make sense to purebred shorthorn guys cause you can't sell em to each other. But it looks like you could take them to the commercial guy. They are the only all British breed recognized composite. Look at what the Balancers and Limi flex and those programs did and are doing. Again part of this is the black factor deal. But man....I envisioned the Shorthorn plus deal to be 60% Durham reds. I envisioned a big ole two year old Durham Red bull winning the shorthorn plus deal every year. Instead it seems like the shorthorn plus deal ended up being black th carrier cattle, mainly females. I weaned most every thing early this year to get some cattle to the Colorado state fair. Doctored one so far in 98 degree heat. Anyway these little half blood bulls keep popping up. They come small and then about this time of year their masculinity and little cresty necks start showing. They just explode phenotypically. I've got some some th tested and some not but we are looking into the Denver pen deal or bull station testing. I really think these composites are the way to draw commercial guys into the Shorthorn breed. The damn black color deal really is the foulup. But there are some commercial guys clinging to red color deal. Mainly old simmi people. With the Red Angus branded deal there are a few red herds around. It looks like to me the breed could put tother a showcase pen of bulls together at midland bull test or a sale in Denver or Missouri or somewhere. Off topic but the reserve grand heifer at the nationals really took a nice picture. I don't know anything about her breeding but to me showed balance in the photo. I like those cattle that are just a little shorter bodied. I think they are a little easier keeping. :)

Well said aj . I to pictured the DR deal as at least 60% RA. Not Hannibal and Heatwave and Heatseeker dominating the shorthorn plus deal. Sad to me but thats the breaks sometimes. I think you and I should meet sometime and talk cows. We r pretty much doing the same thing. Do I see a coalition in the future with like minded breeders getting together to market our cattle? Sure has worked in the past IMO.

aj from what Sue has said, I am sorry I could not make time to come out and visit back in June. I presently have two Shorthorn by Red Angus heifer calves that could be registered Durham Red, but I think I will register as category 3 Red Angus. Something tells me it will be easier to go this route. I realize there will not be the Durham Red title. I can see the first annual meeting of the Durham Red Association being held at The Corner, if it is still open.

Never been to the corner but if they got Jim Beam or Pabst Blue Ribbon , I can survive there. A greasy cheeseburger won't hurt either. <cowboy>

You can call them what ever you want but most I my customers call them "sold".
I  do know of a commerical SH breeder that is using Rob's Reds and tossed the papers.
