I received a cost share grant and the requirements for semen is for the bull to be in the top 20% of the breed. I'm looking at simmental bulls. Does anyone know how you find this info? I got on the ASA website but didn't find it there and didn't see anything about it in he sure catalogues. Thanks in advance!

You can do an EPD search in the Simmental breed.

There is also an EPD percentile table you can look at and figure it out manually. Might take some time though.

Lots of sites will show wether the bull's EPD's are in the top % of the breed. That's what I go by a lot. I rarely use an EPD search, I just usually do it manually by looking at the percentile table or what the semen sales sites have listed as in the top % of the breed.

Someone might know an easier way! I can do some digging here after a while!

Good luck! (thumbsup)

The Kentucky CAIP (cost share program based on tobacco settlement) requires the bull to meet standards for calving ease.  Other criteria are involved but the only EPD standard included in the criteria is CE. I think the bull must have a minimum score of 10.  If your program is similar to the Kentucky program, there are handouts that provide details on meeting the criteria.  Here, it is administered by the University of Kentucky extension service.

Top 20% in what?  Do your program guidelines spell out what they have to meet as far as top 20% goes?  Is it in 1, 2, 3 categories?  Just performance #'s or carcass #'s as well?
Attached is a list of purebred bulls that meet the top 20% in all of the following categories: CE, BW, WW, YW and MM.
If you find out your parameters, you can dial them into the ASA search and get a list of bulls that will meet it.
