Eionmor Gus 80C vs Eionmor Ultra 8C
« on: November 24, 2020, 08:12:51 AM »
I am considering using either bull on a dozen or so cows next year. Would you choose one over the other? From the forum, I can get a good bit of info on Gus, but much less on the type of cow Ultra produces. I run a primarily grass based herd that is out on pasture (grazing or bale grazing) year round.

I remember when Eionmor was showing both of the bulls, and I actually preferred Ultra though in most shows he placed behind Gus becasue Gus was the thicker bull. But by my memory Ultra was better balanced, had better testicles, better legs and moved more cleanly. I didn't like Gus at all. When talking with Robert a few years ago I asked him which bull would make better cows and his answer was Ultra.

Thanks for that. Gus certainly seems to have both his fans and detractors. If their pictures are representative, Im more of an Ultra fan as well.

I know even less about 85c than I do about the other two - so I really have no idea. I have semen on 80 and 8 so thats mainly why I was wondering about them. I see on Digitalbeef that 85C had progeny in 2012 - so there must be some semen around. But what the bulls like? Your guess is a good as mine.

I have some 30b, 80c, and 85c and have always been curious about how the three brothers were different from each other.

I have plans to use one of them on a Super Flag daughter in the future, but have yet to figure out which one might leave the most rib in one.

I have seen excellent beef genetics from both bulls. If I had to pick one, I would chose Ultra 8C mainly because his calves have a bit more natural thickness and rib shape as compared to the Gus 80C's. Gus 80C calves are very correct but some seemed to be just a bit more flat sided. I saw some awesome beef cows in Ireland sired by 8C last year, Depending on what type of cow you are planning to use them on, I think there is a definite place for both bulls.
I had two doses of Mr Gus 80C here and decided to put them in my online sale last January. They sold for $430/ straw.

Neither bull has been tested for myostatin, but by looking at their pedigrees, I am going to guess that they are both free from any of the myostatin strains. Of course, they should be tested to verify this.

Does anyone have a picture of Ultra?
Looking at the picture of 80C, I would almost guarantee he doesn't have 226X or F94L. I've never seen the 3rd strain to know what carriers of that one look like though.

I'm almost sure I have a 30b picture saved somewhere, but I can't figure out where I've buried it.

IMO 8C doesn't look like a carrier. 85C definitely has the 'look' of 226X, and GAFA Mohican could be the source of it though it isn't as pronounced as 85C. If memory serves, I think someone told me they knew someone who saw Mohican in person and suspected he was Myo at the time.. that's pretty distant hearsay at this point though and I can't remember who I heard that from.
Here is a pair of 3/4 sister red neck roan heifers where 1 has 226X and 1 does not, in case anyone is curious.
