Here's a couple pictures of our steer and heifer. As you can tell I haven't come close to mastering the art of taking decent pictures. Now I know the frustration of having pretty nice cattle and not being able to present them properly. Oh well, maybe you can get an idea from these anyway. The heifer is a shorthorn plus from the Angus Lucy line and our bull Tommy Boy. She has great lines and she's a big girl. She's blue roan. The steer is Irish Whiskey and Mossy Oak. Looking really nice just pushing him on weight.

That heifer is DEEP!!! Wow, she's really got that depth of body!!! Depending on what you show the steer as I think he could dominate in his class and go on to do good in the Champion Drive. Nice Calves!!!

Our heifer is HUGE! We bought the Angus cow from our friend Mitch Rohr. He has some really nice pb Angus. The cow wasn't nearly as big as the heifer at her age but she is coming on strong now. Our pb Shorthorn bull is big too so she comes by it naturally.
Our county show is set up pretty weird. Heifers are broker down by breeds. But steers are all thrown together and divided out by weight. We do have a ranch raised category for the steers but we bought this guy. We do have a ranch raised shorthorn steer that looks nice. He should do well in that category. Our county is tough, there is some stiff competition. Thanks for the compliments though, I appreciate it!!!

We've got a "ranch raised" show too. It's called County Bred. All the calves that were bred and calved in the county are eligilble for this show. It's really fun, I like it because you dont have to have the 10000 steer to compete. It's also really good promotion for the breeders within our county!!!

How do you prove that the calves are county raised?  We've talked about this in our county however haven't come up with a good way to POLICE the born and raised part.

You just found the little hole in our program. There is no way to prove it. But there is a lot of barn talk around here and everybody knows what everyones got, and where they got it. If you try and bring in a calf out of the county and show it county bred, someone will raise heck and that'll be the end of that calf. It's pretty hard to have a knockout steer and not have people ask where you got it or who's cow it's out of. And if you have an out of county steer and its just an average calf and you show it county bred no one will care if they beat it. Its kinda low, because people wont really complain unless you beat their calf.

Same way at our fair.....i think it goes back to the honor system and telling the truth......no one lies about whether their calf is born in raised in our county......Last year my steer was reserve grand born and raised and i was more proud of that than any of my achievements in 4-H

At our county fair heifers have to be born in county.  You have to take a form to the breeder & sign & have it notorized.  Of course, there are still low lifes that cheat.  If you can't win by the rules, what have you done?  Next year they are changing the rule for that very reason.

To buy a grand or reserve is one thing, but to raise one is one heck of an accomplishment!!! Congrats on that!!! (thumbsup)

Our ranch raised category is ran a little differently. The steer has to be raised within the immediate family and within our state. You buy the steer and it doesn't count. I'm sure there is still some cheating going on but it limits it because of the brand papers.
