I hate to ask this question for fear that one or two of you may call me stupid...but I tell my kids that if they want to know something, then they have to ask! So here goes...

My kids have 3 show steers and 3 show heifers. I have struggled with each one of them (on and off) since February in getting them to eat their entire feeding. They have been eating Honor Show Chow and some Stabilized Rice Bran. I have to say that I don't feel that most of them ever really cared for the Stabilized Rice Bran. I have found all 6 of them to be picky about fine particles in their feed!

Three days ago, I stopped the SRB and started adding just 1 ounce of Heavy Weight (one of the Purina High Octane supplements) to EACH feeding (steers and heifers) to see if that would help increase their intake (as I was told that it would). Each one of them has licked their pan clean each time! I have to say that I am impressed so far. My plan is to increase the steers as much as I can (per recommendations on the bucket) for a fat supplement.

I will increase the heifers to just the recommended 4 ounces per day for intake. Here is my question- one heifer has gotten a tad fatter than I want her to be. I have cut her total ration back just a bit, and replaced some of the show feed with oats and fiber (Precon or beet pulp). I would also like to start her on some Fitter 35 (another Purina High Octane supplement). Can I feed her the 4 ounces of Heavy Weight to encourage her to eat AND the Fitter 35 to trim some fat at the same time, or does that just not make sense?

For our heifers we think are getting a little to far along in condition the first thing we do is pull back the fat supplements zero then gradually pull grain back by say 15-20%. We always feed free choice hay, good alfalfa grass mix from weaning till March or so then we move from that to quality grass hay a little bit more on the coarse side. Just what we do.

Good luck

We had one that was always a challenge to keep trim enough, we turned her out on pasture at night and fed grass hay during the day when she was locked in with some beatpulp and just enough grain in it to get her to eat it.
hope this helps
