I heard that the lottery is up to 90 some million dollars - what would you do/change if you won? RW

I would ranch until it is gone. <rock>

I would try to buy the rest of the section that I live in and the one acrossed the road from it so I could close the road (it's a dead end road). Build a new show barn with a sale facility attached, Build a new shop to work in, with heat and concrete. Build a working facility all under roof with a lab in it equipped for ET work (probably try to hire a friend of mine from NE to run it). Obviously increase the size of the herd with exceptional females. Build a ton of fence and if there was anything left I might have to build a house and a horse barn with an indoor areana. RW

Pay off the place we are living on now, build a show barn and just see what comes next.  Oh and get a brand new 2010 Mustang!!!!!!

A 90 million win would be roughly 45 million take home. So with that being said:

26 million would instantly go toward the most promising research to finding a cure for lymphomia.
12 million would go directly into an interest bearing account so I could live off of the interest.
1 million would go toward a scholarship fund to help particular students
1 million would go to a certain family I know
1 million to upgrade my facilities; barns, pastures, etc
500,000 to buy the cows I wanted so I would NEVER EVER have to flush a cow again.
500,000 to upgrade my equipment; tractor, baler, uniloader
1 million to invest in a new product whatever trips my trigger at the time. It would either make
    it  great  or it would disappear in a hurry. Either way, it would be fun.
1 million would be "fun money" so instead of doing the twenties at cattle shows, I would give out
    $100's. Now THAT would be fun!!!
1 million for emergency purchases: a cow, a truck, another few acres, etc.

Actually the first $45 million would probably go to income taxes.  So with $45 million left, it would still take quite a few years to ranch until it is gone.

buy a farm.
build super awesome barns with all the good stuff included
buy an 09F-350 or two
splurge on some cows
big aluminum trailer
new house.

Pay for my college and my sister's college
Save enough to retire on when I get to that point.
Buy a new '10 F350
Buy a ton of land
Buy some really good calves
Live on the rest
Oh, and pay off the bills

From talking to some people that have you would also have that many friends an relatives that you never knew you had.

I doubt if I would go crazy like many of thepast winners have done. Many of them went nuts, bought all kinds of goofy things that theynever needed, and before they knew it, were actually in dept - some even went backrupt after winning it big.

Me, I know for certain that I would help those folks that have helped ME over the years. Years ago when we were down and out, we had some folks help us out that we had never met before -- at the time, we had very close to nothing and what they gave us was from the heart -- those kind of people have gotten more and more rare. I would first off find those good folks, and help them back if possible.

After taking care of some much needed paybacks like the above, I would take some time to decide where I wanted to retire, and what I wanted to have around me. As Freddy said, I am sure there are relatives I have never met -- or those that have never taken an interest in my world. Those would still be on thier own -- hate to say it but what goes around comes around most of the time.

I would for darn sure ensure that my love of cattle and good horses was not in vain -- the boys would have the chance to dowhat they wanted in the livestock industry from there on. I may even have to hire my good friend from Iowa to make sure the boys behaved themselves, a daunting task at times.! hehe

I would still want to go "OUT" riding the best horse you could raise or buy -- win or not win -- that's my wish.

Surely there would be some cherities I would love to contribute to as well -- I have many in mind.

I'd want my grandkids to have a chance to ranch too before it's all a memory -- something we all look forward too I guess.

Then believe it or not, I do believe I would take a couple mill over to my little bank and tell them help as many young ranchers as possible, and not to worry about the interest -- if it never came back -- OH WELL

The perfect world -- go back to the basics of life instead of seeing how much we can TAKE from others -- go back to the 60's when neighbors helped nieghbors and there was no bill sent. Good stuff ya know?

Ah well -- makes for a nice dream any way!

Like AAOK, I have never and will never purchase a lottery ticket, but oh what fun and good I could do with 90 million.

i also have never purchased or never will purchase, but if i came into 90 mil i would hire an attorney to see if i could donate some of it instead of letting the government decide how to spend 50%

my list.

purchase some acreage montana, east of 35 in OK and texas colorado and nebraska and build a railroad between them all.

upgrade fairgrounds in san benito county, puchase some adjacent land, build a couple of hotels and restaurants and start holding some working cow horse shows full up in the bridle.

upgrade the animal facilities and host more shows for everything from guinea pigs to cattle.  i would probably buy some land, rezone it so people could live on it and lease out the land to local farmers.

fund a better machine for REI, marbling, etc and fund a study to determine fat distribution on different feedstuffs.

that should about cover it.  probably need a little more.

Know someone (not real well) who was a hardworking couple.  She had been a teacher.  Anyway, a few years ago, they actually won.  After taxes and lump sum distribution they were left with about 17 million.  He went back to school.  She quit her job.  They have had 2 kids.  Neither works outside the home.  They did buy reasonable houses for themselves and both parents.  I think I would be bored stiff.  Everything seems to revolve around where the next beverage is coming from.  Sonic or Starbucks.  No thanks.  We will keep muddling on teaching our kids the value of hard work.  It would be nice to not have to worry. LOL

Thanks for the fun topic, RW!  I've often thought of just what I realistically would do with my share (after the government takes most of it!) if I won.  At 90 million or so, I'd still have a substantial stake.  So, here goes:

1.  Pay off every debt I have.
2.  Help my kids pay off theirs
3.  Put into income bearing investments somewhere around 5 million so I could live very well without worry from the $300,000 or so of interest I'd receive.
4.  Take the remaining 30 million or so and set up a charitable trust which I would spend the rest of my life managing.  Worthy (or not so) charities would apply to me for grants for their causes.  Those I deemed worthy would be funded.

That may sound weird, but I think I'd enjoy giving it away more than I enjoy buying "stuff".  Although with my $300,000 of annual income, I could still buy "stuff".  High on my list of "stuff", a world class cutting horse, a log home in Jackson Hole with a small acreage, and a 1962 Corvette completely original (all numbers matching) and completely restored!

Here's my story, believe it or not.

The only lottery ticket I ever bought was a $1.00 scratch some 20 odd years ago the first day Kansas opened up gambling. A buddie of mine and I were gonna grab a cup of coffee one morning, back when it was 50 cents a cup. Between us we had just enough change for a couple cups. He talked me into chippin in on a ticket. It was a $2.00 winner. He took his dollar and bought a losing ticket, I bought our coffee with my dollar, figured that'd be a good time to quit gamblin!

If I won a 90 million lottery, I'd give it all away. I have enough stress figuring out how too hang on to a 1000 bucks let alone 45 million. 

One of my favorite passtimes is standing in line at the counter at Cenex waiting to pay for $300 worth of diesel, while somebody who never worked a day scratches the goo off a dozen lottery tickets.
