to Husker1 -- did your friend have any other sired calves that did that?? sounds kinda like a mineral deficiency but who knows w/o actually investigating the issue

No, no other issues.  It's really, really odd I know, but the only thing the problem calves had in common was the sire.  This breeder is a feed salesman, so the mineral is probably not an issue!  We held off using the bull do to this fact.
