Griswold Cattle Co Sale are you going?
« on: December 14, 2013, 11:34:49 AM »
I have been looking through a lot of sale offerings lately as I have broke my leg and can't do much else.  I came across the Griswold sale and wish I could go to it.  I like the cows in the offering and if I was starting out in this business it might be a good place to pick up some good cows.
Have any of you looked them over and are you going? What do you think of them?

three things have always bothered me about griswold's.

there isn't much depth in pedigree of maine percentage using whiskey.

limited or no PHA information

the whiskey on angus maximizes hybrid vigor and the offering in general seems to just say use whiskey on angus

i would have liked to see them try and create another maine bull with all their experience.

that said, their cattle are pretty.

there is one lot in there that is a spur emulous master

the reference to starting out is with caution due to the PHA issue which one must be aware of, especially just starting out.

500 units of whiskey sell as a lot.

I've been over there on judging trips and they have some of the best looking bred heifers I have ever seen. I would advise going!

When in motion, you can start the elimination process on the show heifers in a hurry . Lot 1, both the Ali and that first Hard Whiskey  heifers (forget their lot numbers) are super. Finding the really fluid heifers on the move was a little challenging.

Wow! Good prices!!! For those that made it there, how did they look? Not many under the $5000 price range, and I think the lowest one I caught was $3400! Great prices, all the way through, but is someone going to be able to make money on those cows later down the road? Especially some of those older cows?
The semen did real well...
I am glad they did so well. I look forward to seeing the prices tomorrow.

Here lies the problem with Griswold's offering:  Wow! Good prices!!! For those that made it there, how did they look? Not many under the $5000 price range, and I think the lowest one I caught was $3400!

It's been a good many years since we have been in the show ring, but during our time, we came up against several of "Big Money" heifers sold by Griswold. With our bred at home calves, we never  a problem getting around those calves.

From what I've seen in the past 15years, when it comes to buying from a "Jock", dollar for dollar, you'll come out far ahead with Buck.

However, your best option is to learn how to raise your own; less out of pocket, better stock, and an earned sense of Pride

AAOK, that was kind of my point. How is anyone going to make money on those prices. Yea, there is probably a good handful that will be flushed and great offspring produced, but not all. Winning is fun, but at what expense? If it is just one cow, then call it a hobby. But they sold several hundred head at that price, so there had to be buyers there... Are people buying a name or was the quality that deep where people can take that $5000 cow home and turn a profit on her.... Every single one of them....?
We like breeding our own. Yes, we started with someone else's stock (and still do by buying embryos, but raise them ourselves), but our kids get to keep the money they make by selling the heifers, and enjoy having that money in their account.
