Have some things gone too internet?
« on: December 12, 2008, 09:38:43 AM »
While looking through the obituaries I've noticed that for some you can send your condolances through an email to the funeral home. I'm sure that gives the family a lot of comfort.  ??? How much time does it take to get a card, sign it, put a stamp on it & mail it?

I think the internet is great but shouldn't be used for some things.

One thing about online condolecents...kinda nice to share memories ect. I know we enjoyed that with my grandmother.  She taught so many girls in 4-H, and to see all the thoughts of her online in one place was nice.  Others were excited to read them since they hadn't seen some of those girls since there days in 4-H.  Lots of people shared those stories during visitation and at the wake afterwards.

So, I guess its a double edged sword.

i personally like it...people move away, the years go by,  and you lose contact information with them...this way you are still able to be in contact...when my dad passed away, there were people i went to high school with i hadnt heard from since graduation(17 years ago) sign his online obituary...there were even people my dad went to high school with sign it (50+ years ago)....and it gave them the opportunity to share stories that we had never heard....it was very special for us...

I still love to read the paper. People talk about just getting all their news online, but I don't know...there is something I don't like about reading my computer screen as a newspaper....real paper feels good.  :P

I'm not saying this is bad, but certainly am not saying it is good. This past week in our English class we were sectioned into groups and given a short story to read. We had to do two things. 1- break up the story and write a report about and 2- DRAW an illustration of what the book cover should be like. The teacher specifically said DRAW and the presentations were yesterday. Everyone used some sort of internet picture/ paint program for it. She wasn't mad, but she had been the teacher their for the past 45 + years or so and was kind of amazed by it. The whole "times have changed" deal.

I just have one question and this might be for the old timers (sorry  :( ) but when "snail" mail first came out were the older generation then responding in the same way as the older generation now towards the internet and digital technology? Not sure that came out too clear...

There were a lot of condolences this past week for Kent Haberger's family on this site and BW.  I know Marti and her sons appreciated them.  Their pastor even posted a thank you to all those that posted.  The funeral home had a place on their site to do the same.  I thought it was interesting, you could post a public message for everyone to see or you could send a private one to the family. I understand your sentiments though Red.  It seems less personal, but so does text messaging to me and I seem to do that all day long anymore.
