Ok so I'm sorry I've been posting alot lately asking for help! but this steer is just a regular calf nothing fancy. But I was hoping you could rate him from 1 to 10 1 being the least quality and 10 being the highest.. I know he's not very good but anything can help. He weighs about 1200 lbs and shows the last week of June do you guys have any ideas of ways I can make him better.??? THANKS!!! :-\

Not the worst steer I've ever seen. From the picture he needs more guts. Get him on some beat pulp and also some Depth Charge from Purina . That should help give him some more depth and overall volume. We mix one big scoop of wet beat pulp and 1 pound of Depth Charge into our calves feed every feeding . Good luck

I agree with paj315. You can't really feed on depth but you can feed on the flank by giving him beet pulp. Some show feeds have beet pulp already in it. I recommend Rowe Nutrition "Guts" for getting maximum fill while keeping his energy levels good enough. Your steer seems like he has some natural thickness. His structure seems decent. I'd give him a 7. :) Good luck to you!

I would rate him a strong 6 on a scale from 1 to 10...definitely better than average. Based on the photo, I agree he seems to have some decent muscle shape, and he looks sound enough from a structural standpoint. He looks a little green yet, but if your show isn't until June, you have time to get him finished, and having the right amount of cover on him will change how he looks considerably! He needs to end up with about .4 of an inch of fat over the rib. Get him finished and then present him to his potential, meaning have him groomed right, leading slowly with his head up, and setting up correctly, and I think he'll do fairly well. He's definitely not in the embarrassing category! Be proud of him and all the time and effort you've put into your project, and show him like you expect to win the whole shebang!

By the way...are you sure he's weighing that much right now? He may get on the big side if he's already weighing 1200. I suspect he may be a little lighter than that, and if he is, I'm saying that's probably a good thing. You'd rather him be gaining good near the end to keep him fresher looking. If he gets heavy and you try to hold him back, he can end up looking stale on show day.

:) Nice calf-- should have some product in him when done.
Lean Beef beat me to the question about his weight-- if he is 1200 now and your show is in June-- he could get stale and could possibly start to fall apart if he gets too heavy.
I agree with Lean beef that he doesn't quite look like 1200 to me, but sometimes they will surprise you.
What type of forage is he getting?-- Grass hay, alfalfa hay, mix?

Haha Thanks guys for all your help and comments!!I'm sorry his weight is 1,032 lbs the 1200 was a mistake  (lol) ...... I honestly don't like the front end of him but he also is real big-footed too!! I was going to give him a 5 or 6.. he is eating alfalfa hay too.

Clip him right to show off his width, it will also clean up the front end some.....  I showed a lot of calves that looked like him,  Stood third a lot,  not real flashy and didn't maybe look  "the part" for a championship drive....  But carried a lot of meat, hung great carcasses and made me money!    Like mentioned keep his head up, but that flesh under the chin seems to go hand in hand with some growthiness.  And last time I checked, smoked brisket was awful tasty!

Good luck!

Personaly i would take him off the alfalfa, and get him on some grass hay. Just my opinion. Looks good though, i think by june he will look great.

I would get him on stabilized rice bran and the best 3way grain hay you can find, andkeep him on full feed. There is too much protein in alfalfa, I hesitate to start putting him on filler when he actually needs to put weight and finish on.
The stabilized rice bran will help put cover on him and the hay will get him to belly up.
I have had fat steers still gain 2 pounds a day on the hay alone.
