Okay, this is not the best picture of this steer.  I took it last night and he was still a little wet after being blown off.  He will be shown in May and will be slicked for the show. He looks like he "toes out" in the picture but he doesn't, just a bad pose.  My daughter is going to take him to several shows before May that will be "hair shows". I know he needs to be clipped, that will be done next week.

What do you do with this kind of kinky, wavy hair.  When  we blow him out every night after rinsing and putting kleen sheen on it, we comb him as we blow him.  This just does not seem to help the hair lay right and it looks like it is going in 10 different directions. If anyone has any suggestions please help!  Any opinions on this little guy are appreciated too!  Thanks.  Lisa

We had one like that with similar hair problems last year.  What we did is after rinsing him off, before blow drying, is to take a rice root brush or one of those red plastic oval brushes and brush the hair in a 45 until you feel like your hand is going to fall off.  I hate this part, and usually make the boys do it.  Does seem to help.  Maybe someone else will be able to offer some suggestions on a hair care product for you to use as well.  Good Luck!  Nice looking steer.

Brush, brush, brush with the Rice Root brush.  Also, mix in a tube of Super Hair Gel to a gallon of Kleen Sheen.

Thanks AAOK...is that a special kind of gel that you buy or just any hair gel that will work?

Has anybody ever tried Wave Tamer from sullivans? I've heard it works, but I've never tried it.

we used to just slick 'em off, and then 'train' the regrowth with water and a round curry-comb.
Awfully good steer, by the way. ;)

;)  Thank you so much for the compliment on the calf.  We really like this calf, he is my daughter's calf for our county fair in May.  I don't know if you remember or not, but our barn burned down last May with our two steers inside it.  My daughter lost her county steer in the fire seven days before she would have shown him. Needless to say, she is pretty protective of this calf! She is very determined this year with this calf.

I have thought about slicking him and starting over, but the shows we are taking him to will be in the next couple of weeks.  Our county show will be a slick show anyway in May.

Thanks again!!

We have an Alias heifer that looks like she has this  O0.  No kidding lol.  I tried the wave tamer...it worked ok but its pricey.  Try fogging the calf with alcohol, really brush it in then blow.  It seems to really help our heifer.

Thanks Gidget, might just have to give this one a try too.  I don't know where this calf got this funky hair from, he is a Heatwave / Hoo Doo...not really sure where it comes from.  Thanks for the help!

We had one like that last year, we found that if we combed it the direction it wanted to go and then worked around the the angel we wanted it to go it would look good.
(kind of like my hair, I have to comb it the wrong way before it will go the right way.
We had to comb his hair down in the bad spots first then pull it up at a 45% angle, over time it got to where it went the right way. Some times it was down then down and forward then foreward then at the 45 and forward.

The "curls" on the back leg are a drag. We usually trim off the part that is curling back, leaving the straight part of the hair. Usually it will keep growing straight. Although this steer already has better hair than anything we get around here. :)

We had a sunseeker heifer last year that had same problem. Brush down when wet and use a roto brush on him at 45 degrees. It worked wonders on our heifer

I've used the stuff and it works really good and fast. Just using it only on show day worked well but i recomend spraying it on the curly spots a few days before.

We take a round comb after you rinse or wash brush straight down then brush forwards. Worked well with very curly limmy hair.
