We had a day at the fair where the steers were not showing so I went and watched some of the hog show. I am amazed at how fast the type of hog they are looking for can change. I was never a fan of the body builder hogsfrom the late 90's, I did like the pigs that were softer made, had some length, width and muscle but the hogs now are as Eric Dragger said, they are like Hog Heatwaves,  stouter made,  deep bodied, extremely wide topped. and big boned,(that is about where the heat wave comparison ends) After that they are short necked, do not have the length and you can see where they are running into the same structure issues as the show steers.

I guess what really surprised me is how fast the type of hog can change and how the breeders can keep up with the change.

with AI technology and a 6 month long generation, you'd be amazed.  We always had a few hogs growing up and AI'd some show pigs just for family and you'd be amazed how quickly a sorry sow can produce a state fair grand champ pig
