My parents mare, aprx. age 20, has developed white spots all over her body.  She is a chestnut color and I just noticed them today when I was feeding her.  I can't remember seeing them over the summer, but I don't see her enough to know when they showed up.

The white spots are no more than an 1" in circumference and smaller, and they are not a scabs, but the actual hair has turned white.

If it's the same thing my Saddlebred mare has, these are called "bird spots". I don't know why they get them. Some horses get just a few, and sometimes they get more, and more every year. If it is this, nothing to worry about.
You can check with your vet, but it sure sounds like that is what she has. In my opinion, it just adds character.
I wish I could find the picture of a Saddlebred gelding that was covered with them. Head to tail. He looked like an appaloosa. Very strange occurrence, but it does no harm to them.

Thanks, just googled and found some more info.  Apparently bird spots are just genetic and ties back to a horse named "bird spot"
