Not trying to stir a big discussion, but it would be interesting to find out if the Grand was a PHAC steer since Paddy O is a carrier. Also it's interesting that Habanero genetics contributed again (Sire of Paddy O's dam) to another slick steer win in Houston. Habanero , BK Lifeline, Yellow Jacket and now Paddy O seem to sire a bunch of good  slicks.

How did the sale go?

What were some of division winners and who raised them?

Couldn't go this year as we are very dry and hayning every day.

I WILL be at the hiefer show starting about Thursday. We should have 14-15 mostly Angus  heifers there, about 6 in the Scramble show.

Grand sold for 350k and reserve was 310k I believe. Correct me if not. But the kid doesn't get anywhere near that as we all know

My daughter only got 2,250 for her's because thats all 5th place and back get.. The part that I dont get is why they don't allow add on's or buyers??  We had a man come up and offer to purchase her steer for 5,000 out of the sale because he liked the hide and wanted to get it tanned..  I went to the superintants office and they told me it could not be done and that we had to put the steer on the truck... If their not gonna allow buyers they should at least allow add on's... JMO

All of the money the show gets above those limits goes into their scholarship program.  Which would be ok if a kid that "makes a donation" to that fund was guaranteed one of those scholarships when they were a senior.  But they aren't.  To the best of my knowledge they haven't bumped up those limits - which includes all placing calves - since they started this back in the early 90s.

For what its worth, I didn't say anything when I was looking at him, but I did notice that your YJ calf had one of the prettiest looking hides I've ever seen.  Not sure how to describe it, but there was kind of a faint spider web pattern to it.

I agree on the add ons.  Heck in a county show I went to last weekend the grand went for $20,000, granted the kid had nearly been killed in a wreck the week before but still, the 2250 set amount leaves no room for people to help kids out

Thanks Robert, yea that hide got plenty of attention over the weekend and I was able to call Sam Khane this morning and they said I could buy the hide back.  We are gonna tan it ourselves and put it at the ranch...

That 2,250 isn't a limit, it's a minimum and the same goes for the $75,000 and $40,000 figures (the limits on those are 85 and 45).  I always thought the extra money went to the scholarship fund as well but while looking for the min payouts this year, I found this..

The amount of money bid and collected between the Guaranteed Payment and the Potential Maximum Payment from each lot is reserved in the "Bonus Pool." These funds are used to offset any lots that did not sell for the Guaranteed Payment amount and for auction expenses. Any remaining Bonus Pool funds, after all Guaranteed Payment and auction expenses have been paid, are shared among the placing exhibitors. No exhibitor shall ever receive more than the Potential Maximum Payment.

I know the bonus pool payouts have been anywhere from 500-1,200 in the past.

Unfortunately I haven't sold one at Houston in a few years so I don't know first hand what it works.  We had breed champions in 93 and 05 and didn't get anything then but what they called the guaranteed amount.  Maybe there wasn't anything left over after covering the guaranteed amounts those years.  If that is truly how it works, that is a lot better.  I like seeing more calves down the line bring more money vs. it getting concentrated at the top, but for some reason I thought in reality they kicked it all to the scholarship funds, but those pages you found definitely indicate that is not the case.

thats pretty stupid imo that they have it that way, but i agree with chambero on the hide of your calf. it was really neat to look at and he stands out in the showchampions photos with the webbing on his skin
