Im new and wanted to share a few of our calves
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:31:50 AM »
The weather was nice here in Southern Ohio yesterday, so I decided to clip a few of our Jan. Bulls.
I am going to try and post their pictures. The brown appearing one is Jimmy the Greek and the black one is a Shockwave. I follwed the instructions on downsizing, so I hope all goes well.

I have always wondered, how does one go about clipping calves that small.  Squeeze Chute?

I like the Jimmy the Greek calf by the way.

Are you planning on keeping them as bulls?

To answer both posts: The clipping isn't bad in most cases, we mess with the calves a bunch when they are born. However, a few of them become a battle, I mean labor of love. We are going to cut both of these for steers. I am glad the pictures worked, and I am going to attach three more. The little Paddy calf, we may leave a bull due to his 64 lb birth weight, unassited out of a heifer. He would have to be tested though. We AI everything so we don't need a bull.

Really like your shock wave calf. I used him this year and wondered what kind of cow you used him on. Nice cattle by the way.

I really like your Jimmy the Greek calf. What a little power house! I like the color too. It's unusual and should catch the judges attention.

Thank you for the comments on the cattle. The Shockwave calf is out of Payback/Playboy that came from Gartens,KS. We have three of them and haven't been too disappointed. He kept our cows sound that  might have been a little questionable with other bulls. Nice flex on their pasterns and long strided. The picture of the Shockwave is bad because it was taken at 6:45 at night. The camera was on burst mode, and he was beginning to take a step in this one.
I wouldn't reccommend Shockwave to downsize. I think he breeds similar to Golden Child without the TH risk.
We have a nice Shockwave/Full Flush heifer that I will try to post soon.

Most all of our calves run big and the Shockwaves were average, FOR US]. 97, 105, 110 weighed on brand new digital scales within 2 hours after birth. So far, this years range has been from 64 to 148.

I am assuming you said cows, what were the BW's on those cows previous calves out of different sire. I used him on a Mossy Oak x Angus cow. This will be her third calf. First one was Northern Improvment 65#s, second one was Pale Face 70#s. So I am hoping she has another smaller one. She usually lays down spits them out and keeps on going. I was thinking of using him again this year. I wo'nt get to see my shockwave an til the last week of this month.

We calve all of our cows in the barn and we like to feed them. Most of our herd is 6-11 years old and 100 lb calves are very common for us. I don't consider Shockwave a hard calver. We have had around 20 Heatwaves over the past 3 or 4 years and the only  three C-sections we have done were on heifers we bought bred out of sales. The calves were Pale Face, Get it Done, and Heatseeker

The livestock (show) industry is a tough one- if you've never had anything worth a damn you might as well go on the internet and rundown everybody you can.
