Hi all,
Just posting up a reminder to all of you to try and make the 2008 Kit Pharo Bull and Female sale November 10th-11th in Burlington, CO. Heifers will be sold the first day. Please don't write off these cattle as too small. The bred heifer I bought won Grand Champion cow/calf pair at the 2007 county fair. The bulls ain't fitted and are NEVER put on grain; you see what you get. They are fat as hogs on brown grass and make super mamas and daddies. If you attend, I will be the kid in the kaki PCC cap probab;y wearing a coat that says either Cade or MYT Show Cattle on it. Let me know if you plan on attending so I can meet some of you in person.

OK, here is the PCC BULLetin for some of you to look at if you want the particulars of the sale or online and SUS bidding. There will also be a FREE low stress livestock handling seminar on Monday night. Afterwards, you may talk or go to a fine steakhouse in town that offers excellent food.

Change in the Weather –

It has been very windy in Eastern Colorado today.  North of us they are getting snow.  Charlie Totton, PCC producer from South Dakota, said he is getting lots and lots of snow.  He’s is having to delay the delivery of his heifers (Lots H7-1 and H7-2).

Sale Forecast…  It looks as though the high temperature for Monday will be in the mid 30’s.  The highs for Tuesday will be in the lower 40’s.  You’d better bring your coat.  There is a chance for light snow Sunday night through Monday night.  It is supposed to be partially sunny on Tuesday (bull sale day).

I don’t think you will have trouble getting to the sale – but I would suggest you check weather and road conditions and allow plenty of time.  To keep tabs on the weather in Burlington, Colorado, click on the link below.

As I said in an earlier PCC BULLetin, the weather will have to be extremely bad before we would even consider postponing the sale.  Over half of you will probably be participating in our Fall Bull and Heifer sale via one of our three Stay-At-Home options.  Therefore, weather and road conditions are not as big a factor as they could be.

Adapt to Grass –

I just scanned through an article written by a Beef Extension Specialist concerning the use of newly purchased young bulls.  Among other things, he said:

“When you get ready to turn that young bull out to pasture, you will want to adapt him to grass.  As mentioned earlier, sudden changes in the diet can interfere with digestion, metabolism and reproduction.  Sudden changes in diet can interfere with your bull’s sperm production and inventory.  It will take about 60 days for new sperm to develop.  Additionally, you may want to consider feeding your new bull a little something in the pasture.”

I do not disagree with this fellow’s advice.  He is saying this because most seedstock producers develop their bulls on a hot feedlot ration.  Silly as it sounds, they really do have to be adapted to grass.  Wouldn’t you rather buy bulls you can turn out to pasture without adapting them to grass?

NO grain required!  Because of the way our bulls have been bred and developed, we believe they can breed more cows for more years than bulls coming out of most programs.  Sex is NOT work for our bulls!

The Baldy Makers –

If your cows are solid black or solid red in color and becoming more and more purebred, you might consider using one of our baldy-maker Hereford bulls.  The baldy cow and calf have never gone out of style.

Hybrid Vigor –

Although hybrid vigor is not totally free, it’s as close to free as we’re ever going to get in this business.  Hybrid vigor has a significant effect on growth and performance, but its greatest effect is on fertility, doability and longevity.  Therefore, a crossbred cow has huge economic advantages over a purebred cow.  Check my article on Hybrid vigor below.

Longer List –

I have talked a couple of customers into adding more bulls to their list of potential bulls.  If you have a limited bull-buying budget, we suggest you keep your list as long as possible.  As long as you are willing to bid the base price, your bid is a valid bid.

A few SUS bidders will give me lists with 60 to 120 bulls on it – just to purchase one or two bulls.  What they are doing is the equivalent to sitting at the sale for the entire sale watching for soft spots in the sale.  They are gonna get their money’s worth out of the bulls they purchase – and they don’t even have to be at the sale!  What a deal!

SUS Bidding –

Over the years, 25 to 30 percent of our bulls have been purchased by customers using our Sight-Unseen (SUS) program.  It’s humbling to know that so many customers place that much faith in us.

You still have time to submit some SUS bids.    Except for an emergency, all SUS bids must be received by 5:00 pm on Saturday, November 8th.

If you plan to purchase bulls through our SUS program, we ask you to contact Gary Rhoades or myself ASAP.  You can contact Gary by calling 1-800-315-1970 or by sending an email to [email protected].  You can contact me by calling 1-800-311-0995 or by sending an email to [email protected].
