Low birth weight bulls for club calf heifer???
« on: October 02, 2012, 03:47:10 PM »
Hi, I am about to start breeding a group of heifers I kept from last calf crop. I kept 40. Some are very clubby and some are just good we'll balanced females. I was wanting to get some input on some bulls to use on them. My main concern is to get a live calf on the ground and keep the heifers safe. But, I'd like to see some good calves too. I've got a few bulls in my tank that I am going to use.
What do y'all recommend??

Your best bet to get a live calf is to breed them all to a LBW Angus bull .

Some of the ANGUS bulls work good and if using the right ones can produce you a x female good enough to put back in the herd ....I'm not sure what clubbie bull to use yet, not sure they are consistNT ENOUGH....Going to try BREEATHE EASY
for a start... Been using  a Charolais bull Freds Fast Company F69  (we raised ) on x heifers, reg. charolais and reg. ANGUS  WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL........THEY HAVE WORKED AS REPLACEMENT AND SELL A SMOKE STEER SOME OF THE TIME....
Bluegrass & other Charolais bulls out there to use, some of them don't have much eye appeal to their calves but the heifers can work for reeplacements ....There are options out there to make you more money than some of them....

We have clubby bred females and the absolute smallest calves we have ever had were out of Tiny Tim.  They are super consistant and have some look.  We have bred to a LBW Angus bull and our calves weren't as small or as good.  We swear by Tiny Tim.  One of our Tiny Tim's out of a first calf heifer was Grand Champ overall at our county show this year.  That calf also had some hair.  All of ours have had a real soggy look to them and they are good to be around.  We ran onto him by a fluke, but I am glad we did.

We have used OCC Homer for years. Rocky Balboa has always been good on heifers also. Both of these bulls will make good replacements and pretty decent steers.
