Maternal Bull
« on: December 15, 2011, 03:13:50 PM »
I was wondering what bull would be good for this awesome cow.  i need one that will have to potential to produce a great maternal heifer. I was thinking about the new bull Mojito.  What is your guy's opinion?

If I had an 'awesome' cow.. and wanted to produce a 'great' heifer- in one try...  I think I'd go with a proven bull.. not a baby calf.

wasn't able to make it to Denver last year but know the guys real well that got him ready for display and they said he was made right and a real nice bull.  They said they wouldn't be afraid to use him one bit.  but again if shes awesome id rather use something proven than taking a chance.  wait for calves to hit the ground and see what kind of cows he will work on.  there have been many display bulls over the years that look "awesome" and yet never produce a barn burner calf.

I have never used either bull and I am not sure what breed (s) you are looking at, but it seems like I have seen a lot of nice Sunseekers, Monopolys, and Who Made Whos in the clubby genetics. Another one I was kind of curious about and by the way I am interested in anyones input on all this like I said I dont have first hand knowledge this is more of an observation, but I also have seen a few Harcore that I like.

I would stick with a proven purebred bull that is known for siring maternal attributes, especially if the cow is cross bred.  Too many crosses generally makes for unpredictable offspring.

One look at GCC cattle and the sale they have every year, Irish Whiskey and Meyer is pretty much right on the money. Not knowing what esle is in your cow, I would only be concerned if there is a PH possibility. I have seen some great terminal Heat Wave x Meyer. Cunia is pretty reasonable still if you are thinking of a flush. I think there are a whole host of Black and Red Angus bulls that could fit the bill as well. Maybe you could post a picture of your cow. That is always helpful.
I prefer shorty's so I would recommend something probably completely different.

Well, here's the deal...  The OP stated that they thought of using Mojito- obviously a crossbred, clubby type bull.  This poster- stated that they'd heard great things about three other, more proven clubby crossbred type bulls-- by using prior knowledge of Mojito- and assuming that the OP is talking clubby bred target point.

Now, the thing to realize, for all reading-- is that club calf sires really aren't geared to be maternal- some might be more 'maternal' than others, but for the most part, they're whole reason behing being created is to produce a show calf- particularly a show steer.

I don't see anything out of line with their comments.

Several high percentage Maine-Anjou bulls have traditionally worked very well on Meyer 734 daughters.  One which has performed extremely well for me is GF Kadabra, to producing both Show Heifers, and Breeding Bulls.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've always felt like WMW is probably the top "club calf" maternal bull out there...

I think you are right in the clubby market- Good WMW females are pretty valuable.

Do you think WMW produced more 'great' females or 'terminal oriented ones' in his lifetime...?

What about Heat Seeker?

Heat Wave?

I find it hard to believe that any club calf bull can be considered 'maternal'- but i guess if you got me down and pointed a gun at my head I'd agree and call WMW the king of club calf mamas- he is the best at producing females for a diamond in the rough.
