My new bull--- made an oops.
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:14:26 PM »
Wasn't expecting this calf- guess it goes to show those talking about genetics don't lie... Two blacks can in fact make a RED>

About 2 weeks ago, we started getting calves sired by the upcoming 2 year old bull we raised and bred exclusively with last year as a baby.  His first calf was born July 12- and he will not be 2 years old until the end of Sept.  He is sired by the Dr. Feelgood bull we bought from Jeff Cornell (feeder duck), and from the best Angus cow on our place.  We call him "Pyromania".  I would guess there will be another 10 or so cows and first calf heifers bred to him yet to calf throughout the fall-- although we sure didn't expect the last two to calve so quickly-- even the vet was wrong!  I have not seen any of these calves in person yet- as they are at my parent's place-- but I'm impressed thus far none the less-- kinda interesting looking calves for them to be less than a day old in the pictures.  I attached his picture taken last Jan- after running 15 cows since turning 10 months old-- obviously!

Anyways, the solid red bull calf is from a Red carrier Angus cow- Beckton Lancer dtr.  and the blue heifer calf is from a purebred Kool daughter.  We've also got another solid black bull calf that I cannot find the picture of right now-- his mother is a grand daughter of OCC Homer.

i really like the middle one.

I like the last bull. I wasn't expecting solid black as I read his bloodlines.

I like the last bull. I wasn't expecting solid black as I read his bloodlines.

got a little bit of white in the flank-- and a tad in the tail... Genetically, I think he's blue roan.  Actually that whiteish bull didn't throw me but one blue roan calf-- the rest were all black or black with white socks.  This guy's mother goes back to a Herf cow, she's only 3/4 Angus.  I've bred her a couple years to smoke bulls-- and got black calves-- and the rest of the years to shorthorn bulls-- and got black calves.  I think she's coming 8 year old.  She's as homo black as anything has ever been, I'm afraid.  But boy does she make 'em good, grow, and chunky.  We kept her very first heifer calf last year-- interesting pedigree-- sired by shorthorn bull who's triple bred original Mona Lisa cow 3x on the top.

Scurs too, but didn't develop them until after a year old.  i'm liking this bull more and more- and think that he'll mature to look real neat...  course I bet he's hungry right now (pop)

zZack-- I've been trying to get a blue roan since 2005-- finally got the first one last year----------------- and she's got a twin brother and was checked no good...  Finally got this one now-- but think i might have close to enough cows-- and will probably sell her.  Thanks though, she could be neat-- he mother has a coming yearling that I think should supreme at our county fair this week for my cousin.

Got a solid red out of a witchdoctor x sagahatchee bull bred to a solid black free whiskey daughter.  The dam of the free whiskey is a daughter of witch doctors dam.

What happened to his rump? His hocks are knocking in the photo. Is he just that narrow?

nope, on purpose...  I don't own him though, or any of the cows he bred.  He's at my parent's.

look at it this way-- that bull stands a 100 to 1 chance at producing anything better and leaving a far more impacting legacy-- than any club calf bull you use.

He sure should sire those below average calves you strive for. Funny how when someone says something negative they turn into your parents. Please show us what you raise then.

shorthorns...  duh.

but don't worry, if I get stomped at my state fair for 3 years in a row by a bunch of 'average' red commercial cows-- I won't quit the business and breed them all clubby.
