Pigs, Pigs and more Pigs!!!
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:35:14 AM »
Well it seems that we have quite few people on here that raise and/or show pigs. So what do you show or what do you breed?? What sires from where do you like best on your breed???

We bred mostly blue butts, and one litter of Durocs.  The sires we used were R2D2, Willie, and Cash.   The Willie's were  really cool and stout and will probably use again next year, very saleable pigs.  The R2D2's were late bloomers and really stoutened up, but I questioned their structure, as they were downheaded pigs that were not real strong behind their shoulders.  The Durocs, were pretty common.  Anyways that's my 2 cents.

We raise york crosses......we havent used AI yet and try to find a reasonable boar but around here good ones are hard to come by and when you are done and you take them to teh auction they bring like $50. I brought a boar there a few years ago and got $7 yes $7 and there was nothing wrong with him ...just no buyers
If I didn't have my cows... I would be a sane person.

My family showed pigs for years.  The nice thing about showing pigs is that you can ususually find a decent hog for a couple hundred dollars and when you go to a show all the supplies you need will fit in two 5 gallon buckets.  It's not near as much work as showing cattle and you can afford to have quite a few more good hogs around than good calves.
And, it's a lot tougher to train a hog to show than to break a calf to lead......

We buy our pigs each spring.    We are not breed loyal but usually show Yorks and Durocs.   Last year, we had a Chester White gilt that did quite well.   This year, all we have so far is yorks.     We will be getting a couple more for the fall shows.    I know of a couple litters that I want to look at..  one is a Fatal Attraction

Daydream.. we have an ARK First Blood boar pig that will be cut later this week but if you are interested, let me know.

I dunno about training Dusty - my daughter had a pig last year that would literally do anything for candy.   I've never seen anything quite as trainable as Stumpy.    Now having said that - the mass  majority of the pigs we've had do whatever they want whenever they want no matter how much the kids work with them.

This is our first year showing hogs.  My kids got 2 basic gilts just for fun.  Basically its my 5 year olds clover kid project to keep him busy this summer.  We call him the "pig whisperer".  My husband said Robert Redford has nothing on Evan lol (thumbsup)

Justme, what breed is that pig?? I am gona say 1/2 hamp, 1/4 hereford and a 1/4 duroc.

Day Dreaming?? How much do you pay for your boars?? you can get decent boars for about $50 a unit, and AI'ing is fairly easy, and easier then cattle, and easier to tell when they are in heat

Ive shown pigs in 4-H for 4 years now and just love it!  I worked with "Jezebel" alot, and she got so good -  i could bring her in the front yard, horse pasture, ect, and pretend i was showing, she'd never run away. She definetly had a personality - if i didnt scatch her before i worked her or was too rough ect, she would squeal like heck and  run  around in tight little circles - it was sooo funny. She would even stop and back up on command. We won showmanship and got third or fourth in market out of 60+ hogs. I had a really tough time selling her -  i just loved her.

BCC  hereford lol.  I have no idea, it was a $65 pig for him to have fun with.  He has a better gilt than her.  The red one is named Cinnamin (his sister named her) and his is a pink one that is really pretty good for what he paid for it, its name is Porkchop.

My boys love to show pigs!  Here is the sale pig from last fall:

Our favorite boars for show pigs are:  The Beast, Power Look, McLovin, and Monkey Motion.  This one was a power look gilt.

My son loves showing pigs (more then cattle to dad's dismay). He has a x-bred and duroc this year and can't wait until the first show on Friday in Topeka. I will have to get some pictures to post of him showing. I think I got him two pretty good pigs this year but before last year it had been 8 years since I have been around pigs so I am still learning.
