This sounds really dumb, but how do you use it? and are there any other ways to get rid of dead hair? my show is the end of july but my steer almost has a body full of dead hair. I'd like to get him a new coat! I also dont have a cooler, just a lot of fans. Thanks in advance.

If you do not want to go that rout get the shed comb, a rice root brush and work the hair before you feed, after you feed, before you rinse, after you rinse, and when ever you have free time. As I tell the kids if you do not put in the work you will not see the results.

You could try try the weaver shedding comb and work the daylights out of him with it but we just slick em down around mid March and start over again . Unless you have a show coming up in the near future and are wanting to try to keep some hair for that. Otherwise shear them.

What kind of a blade do you use and how short do you clip them down?

If your show is the end of July you don't have enough time to shear them and grow the hair back.  Buy a shedding comb from Sullivans or Weaver and you will really like it.  Use it daily until you stop getting hair coming out.  They work better than anything.  Next year start earlier with the shedding comb and you will be really pleased.

Go to the Pet Section at Wal Mart.  Buy a shedding comb there.  It is cheaper than anywhere else you can buy one.  It is the exact same comb.

The one I got from Sullivan's even has "puppy tracks" painted on the handle!

Just pull the hair down and forward at about 45 degrees, and you will be amazed at how good it works.  Let the comb do the work.  Watch how much the steer likes it!  I always laugh when we shed them out every spring.  They just absolutely love it.

Don't pull tail head or anything from the quarter down or knee down on the front legs.

My girls showed heifers, and showed year round, so had to keep every hair possible. Our daily routine was much like VC, plus fans. This time of the year, and through the Summer we dyed the Show Calves regularly to keep the hair fresh.
