put in commercial herd or sell at expo?
« on: October 12, 2008, 08:51:22 AM »
I've managed to keep one heifer. Told the hubby it's good for me to have something to work for. The nephew wants her for a replacement heifer.
The picture is horrrible & I haven't worked w/ her for about 3 months. Also she's set-up terrible. Her structure is pretty good actually.
She's out of Hard Core & Iceman & my Foreplay tank. She was also born 12/23/07. I know most would fudge but I'm trying to be honest. Her 1/2 sister went to the Savell's in texas & did pretty good on the show circuit there.

Be honest, I'm on valium & can take anything now!  ;)

I think she is really nice and would make either a good show prospect or replacement.  When is the expo?  I guess your decision should depend on when the expo is, so you  have time to get her ready.  She would look good out in the field for sure.

the Ohio Beef Expo is around the middle of March.
Biggest problem w/ her is that on her maternal line they gain on air. I need to really watch that she fills out but doesn't get fat.

I know the feeling!  Our heifer gets just a little feed and tons of beet pulp and still gains. I guess I would rather have one that can gain, cuts the feed bill! I would aim for the expo, it sounds like a good goal.

I don't consider that a problem.  Nice heifer - I love the volume and broodiness.

she's also got those freaky Foreplay eyes. What I like about her & you can't see by the picture is that she has a wide top & nice butt.
I have until January to decided but was curious on what others thought.

Red, you have a good heifer on your hands. She really looks good. This type of heifer will work anywhere. It is not a problem if she gains on air. That is a very good trait, and there should be many more out there that do the same. This quality should be a prerequisite for any female that is to be flushed. It drives me crazy when I see some of the thin skinned, hard doing females that are having embryos pulled from them. They are not helping the industry at all, and are only propagating a bunch more cattle that need to be tied to the grain bin to survive. I have said for many years that many who show cattle cannot tell the difference between femininity and frailty. I like some extension and angularity in the front ends of my females, as much as anyone, but many of these so called goose fronted females , are nothing more than a picket fence with a rug thrown over them once they enter production.  Opps.... I have started to rant again.... sorry!!   Red your heifer is the right kind! Mass produce a bunch more like her

Bring her to my house and we will put her in the show string. Show heifer! LIke her depth of body and she definitely says maternal. Have to see the gal in person but I like HER. I would show her in heartbeat. Bring her to the heart of all we will show her for you.
Life is too short....don't sweat the small stuff.

Cathy, I think that I would give her a go in your herd. You can move her to the commercial herd after you've had some fun with her and those Foreplay influenced cows are usually pretty good. Maybe she'll get you out and help you out with your cardio @ the same time. Brent

it's not a matter of keeping her, it's whether or not she's beef expo material or if we should turn her out to pasture..
We've kept or sold all this line of cow family.

You know your cattle better than we do, so I'm sure you'll make the right decision.   I just think its good to hear you talking about cattle again.
