I know there are some of you that put in a lot of embryos.  What would you consider the optimum age span for a recip?

I would say not a virgin heifer or a first calf heifer. I would say after that any cow should do age wise until she starts to show her age. Some start to slow down sooner than others. Some might be getting worn out by 7 and some might be fine until 12. If you get too picky though you won't have any.

We have found that from age 4  (when calving) and up are good. We don't have an upper age limit, just until we don't feel the recips produce enough milk to raise a quality a calf. We have some 11 year old recips this year. We have found it very hard to get 1st calf heifers to stick and so now we don't even mess with anything to use as a recip until they are age 3 when implanted.

we have had the best luck with cows between 5 and 8 years old. Our conception rate is better for some reason in that age range and the cows are still in their prime milking age, and we use mostly crossbreds for our recips.
