Jason and all,
Spoke with John at the AMAA.  They are ready to get on board with us.  He was MOST helpful and wants us all to consider some things...
Date to start at least 2011
Name of scholarship-cks can be made to that fund and they can be mailed to AMAA and they would set up a seperate acct at the Platte City Bank where they have their accts and the Foundation money they have set aside for their scholarships.
They give 2 1000.00 scholarships a year, we  could do that or 250 or 500.  The application may have to be reworked if less than 1000
Their applications are sent out with the National Junior Rules and are due May 1 of each year.
We need to decide do we just operate off of interest each year, have a fund raiser each year or have confirmed donors to cover our scholarship each year...we need to make sure we cover it before we promise it
The AMAA are willing to receive the donations, (made out to the fund) report funds to whoever is the contact person or persons, send out eblast to advertise and write it up in the Voice and advertise it that way.  This would be a huge help!

See what you think and we can go from there.  I told John we were in the beginning stages and we would be in touch.

Thank you John for your support of the youth and honoring Red!!!!

I think this sounds great, sorry been out of the loop for a while, I agree with LT to start in 2011 and try and get something in place for the Ohio Beef Expo.  I think if you start now and get it in the works, but give it a while to build so it is done right and is a lasting memorial.

As a current college student my 2 cents is not to have a GPA requirement or and ACT min. score,  I never have liked those scholarships seeing how the scholarship requirements are driven towards a book instead of a bunk, and the scholarship is ag intended

We need to get this done.  Looking back at Steer Planet turning 5 this year, we owe a lot of the success to Red.  Lets get this done.

I agree; it's time to Take Action!

What do we (the SteerPlanet members) need to do?  Start sending money?  Did John, and the AMAA agree to help, join or make the RED Scholorship a part of their awards?

Direction, Please.

If you want to make this happen you really need to appoint someone to get it done. They could have a couple of people help them. Just do it!

Jason and all.
I have contacted the American Maine assoc and they are researching some things and have promised to get back to me.  I will let you all know as soon as I receive info on how we start if we want to go through them.

Let me know what you find out.

Here is a wild idea, there is still time for someone to receive a scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year.  Steer Planet will donate 2 $500 scholarships, one in Red's (Cathy)  name and one in Hereford Footballs (Chris) name.  Put together an essay contest, then a committee of steerplanet users will vote on who wins the 2 scholarships.

Obviously next year we would need to get more structured and maybe seek additional ways to raise funding and make it an annual deal.  But, at least we can have something to show right now.

Yep, would take volunteers to be on the committee.  Hopefully most of the people in this thread would be part of it.

When I was in high school I applied to a bunch of different scholarships, I recieved some ag related scholarships and the most important one to me was one that is similar to what we are trying to set up here, definitely not the dollar amount, as it was also a $500 scholarship, but the reason that it was being offered. At the FFA banquet that year they had a representative from the schlorship commitee come to the banquet and give a brief explanation of the gentlemen who it was in honor of and the impact that the person had in the life of so many. It wasn't a long speech, just a couple minutes telling a little about his life, but it meant a lot to me that they were there to present the award to me.

I know it would very much depend on who the recipient is and more so where they are located, but if at all possible I think it would great if a member of Steer Planet could be in attendence at a FFA banquet somewhere. They wouldn't necessarily have to make a speech, but we could write up a little letter that the presenter could read.

Just a thought.

Jason, Linda,
??? Would anyone be elligable to apply? I am getting ready to go into college but not for ag. I will be studying music performance or music education (I either want to become a country music singer or a music teacher.) I did a gap year so I am no longer in school but will be a college freshman. I have showed cattle for going on 5 years. I'm just curious if you would have to be going into an Ag feild to qualify?
thank you

I will have to differ until we get a committee together to set the ground rules for applicants.
